Help with Cable Pattern

Hesira, Now you know what I avoid that particular book. Their directions are often confusing. What this means is that you purl the first of three stitches and knit the other two. Which they could have written, but didn't. Obviously, on the previous row, that stitch was set up to be purled on the cable row. HTH

Basically you have a 5-stitch cable with a purl in the center that STAYS STATIONARY. So you put three stitches off onto your cable needle, work the next two on the left needle. Now put the purl stitch off the cable needle and onto the left needle and purl it. Now work the last two stitches off the cable needle.

Done.

Thanks, Wooly. I thought that was what they meant. So, by slipping the purl stitch onto the left needle, purling it, then knitting the other 2 cable stitches, the purl stitch remains stationary.

I do agree with Katherine, it is difficult to figure out some times. The could make it simple as she said but use up more space. Proficiency?

Exactly. The purl stitch doesn't move, you're manipulating the cable around the purl stitch. Once you've done it a few times you'll get the hang of it. This is one of the few cable manipulations for which I need to use a spare needle - the rest I just drop stitches off the left and pick them back up in the order necessary for the cable cross :D
