Easy sock patterns and question

What would be the easiest sock pattern to start with for someone who hasn't knitted socks before?Preferably a free online one. All this talk of knitting socks is making me envious as it's something I've always wanted to do.

Also I was wondering after reading a pattern that said fingering weight yarn what weight or type of yarn that would be. Am in England and never heard of it myself.

Many thanks in advance :o)

Fingering is thinner than DK, much thinner. Just a bit heavier than laceweight.

That would be 4 ply for you. Here is a very nice simple pattern, it does help to be familiar with using 4 dps and knitting in the round.

I just learned of this cool resource from the stitch and b*tch calendar:

It goes over what all those little symbols mean on the yarn sleeves. People here, of course, are the real experts! Madelaine

There's a tutorial at socknitters.com, starts you with casting on, takes you through grafting the toe. Or you can try the toe-up sock on the same site.

If you're comfortable with GAUGE and you're willing to do a little math I'll hook you up with my sock formula pattern.

The "Craft Yarn Council of America" is promulgating these as "universal standards". For a yarn manufacturer to join the organization it must comply with the Council's self-imposed labelling standards.

But it isn't universal by any means. The only labelling requirement in the U.S. for imported yarns is fiber content and weight/length information. Anything else is extra :D

Note: The above is my opinion based on information I have read over the past few years. Don't take it as gospel, do your own research.
