OT: Endometrial Ablation...anyone?

Hi all,

Sorry for the touchy subject, but there isn't a better group of women (or so many in one place) that I could ask such a question of. Have any of you had endometrial ablation? If so, at what age? or how long since you had it done? I'm considering it. I'm 41 and figure that I've got 10 more years before the big "M" and wondering if it's worth it.

If anyone doesn't want to post publicly, feel free to email me.

Thanks, Jenn

Jenn, I am not actually sure what that is. Is it what we used to call a "D&C"?

There is, or used to be, alt.support.endometriosis which was a very good group. Also Google for Dr. Redwine in Oregon; if he's still in practice, he was the most highly recommended surgeon.

Hi Katherine :-),

That was my first question. Then my doc handed me a pamphlet. I found a copy of it online. Take a look under "What is this procedure like?" to see what they're doing in the new millennium. I just want to hear ~first hand~ from women who have had it done. I don't want to get it done and then end up back where I started in 5 years or less.

Thanks, /J

Hi Jenn, not had personal experience of endometrial ablation, but from a professional point of view I have met several women who've had the procedure> Most have benefited greatly, and say it's improved their lives enormously, although a few have had initial improvement which has gradually deteriorated. Nobody I've met has reported being worse than originally. I kind of feel it's got to be worth a try, but I guess it's a personal decision after getting as much info as poss Good luck, let us know what you decide Love & higs Christine

A friend of mine had it done and is happy with her outcome. Her only gripe: in 3-5 years the endometrium regenerates itself so she'll need the procedure again at some point unless she manages to get all the way through menopause first.

I've considered it but I'd rather have a hysterectomy than have a cauterization procedure every 3-5 years for the next 15 years. My doc is VERY careful to stress the fact that an endometrial ablation does NOT replace birth control and that a pregnancy following the procedure could be as bad or possibly worse than a tubal pregnancy.

I have not, Jenn, although I am going through pari-mentalpause right now. Last cycle was 77 days between, yippeeeeeee! Noreen

I had it done a number of years ago due to heavy bleeding in the few years before menopause. It did what it was supposed to do - relieve the bleeding, and so I had no complaints. It was a day procedure which (if I recall correctly) I had done on a Friday and was back at work on Monday.

I seem to recall a number of procedures back then - cone biopsy, D&C...... I do not miss my period, and have finally found a herbal remedy for hot flashes which works for me - 50 mg Soy capsules, taken twice a day. They're much less expensive ($11.95 a month) than some of the glitzier stuff on the market.

Hello, Jen. I had no idea what Endometrial Ablation meant and so did a search about it. Found out what it is ... (amazing!) Since I didn't know what this is, I've obviously not had it done; but while I was searching I found these two groups for support before, during and/or after the procedure. Hopefully the girls there can give you first-hand information and opinions.

us know how you're doin' and what you decide. Will keep you in mythoughts. Eve

PS - I'm in the same stage as Noreen, and though this is such a sober subject, her "yippeeeee!" comment truly made me LOL 'cause that's EXACTLY how I feel.

I just *knew* somebody *had* to be in the same stage! Hoping the next cycle goes... twice as long! (my mother went six months, got one, and that was IT. She was the same age I am now, which is 47...) Noreen Yes, my yippeeee was probably NOT quite... 'kosher' but, I couldn't HELP it!

Hell, when I manage to make it 29 days between rounds I'm pleased as punch. I wouldn't trade my kiddo for the world, but I'm finished with that equipment now - too bad the intellectual message doesn't cross the autonomous functions switchboard!

Thanks everyone for your replies. My doctor had first said we could try hormones but I'd have to promise to never smoke. Well, I had just quit two weeks prior and said, "I can't make any promises." I'd love to go on Seasonal, the pill where you only get your period 4 times a year! As I said to my DH, "I'm not having anymore kids, why the h*ll do I need this monthly sh*t." But alas, I smoke... therefor that's not an option. :-( I was on the phone w/ my mother this morning. Believe it or not, this is the first I've mentioned any of this to her (and I live 7 miles from her!). She's hard to discuss health issues with because 1. she's a bit of a hypochondriac and 2. She discusses it with the whole family (6 siblings). Anyway, she said she had the same problem (way back when...she's 79 now) and had waited way too long to get a D&C....she had become anemic by then. So she is all for me getting it done. Hmmm...guess I need to call my doctor.

Once again, thank you all for your responses. It's great to know that there is this group out there to help with support on such issues even when it's WAY OT. :-)

/J- I'll keep ya posted
