OT: New Job!!!

I finally had it with the nursing home - not just too much time on my feet for an old woman, but just fed up with the administration and so on. So - I took a splurge and signed up to be a traveling nurse. I honestly had not heard of such a thing before moving to FL, but they are all over the place down here. Maybe we were just better staffed in IL or else I just did not pay attention. Well, I am home from my first day. I am driving 2 1/2 hours to Jacksonville both ways to work in a hospital once again. This is just while I am in orientation. After that I will stay somewhat closer to the place. I am over joyed. Sorry to not be able to knit on the way since I am the sole driver, but it means so much to me to be back at real nursing once again.

I am so far behind on reading that I have absolutely no idea what is happening in the group - just hope it is mostly pretty good. I will try to read up on the weekend.

Hugs! Susan Carey

The best of luck to you. There are a lot of traveling nurses around here, and they seem to really enjoy their work, not to mention the great $$$$ they make! Hope everything works out well for you. Marie and the cats

Susan

Congrats on the new job! I see traveling nurses several times a week visiting my very elderly neighbor, and it warms my heart to see there is someone who will make house calls to her. My hat is off to you and your profession for doing such vital work!

Thanks to all for the nice comments. Just to clarify: Travelers are not the same as home nurses or visiting nurses. I have done that in the past, but this is a jump to working in another hospital in a different city. We have nurses in our orientation who are from California and Alaska doing real traveling. I just wanted to try it. As someone mentioned, it does bring in more money.

No time for knitting at the moment, but when I settle down in my new digs, I should be able to do some.

Thanks for the kind words. Susan

Susan, Good luck with your new job. From what I've been told Florida ( I live in Ormond Beach) is extremely short handed when it comes to qualified nurses. I've known several nursing students who had jobs before they were even close to graduating. Remember that the population of senior citizens here is by percentage much higher than in most states. Not to mention the large tourist population. So I have no doubt that the hospitals are always busy. I'm glad that you are happy with it so far. Travel Safely!!

Congratulations Susan! I always hear about how there's an incredible nursing shortage, but then I hear about the hell that some nurses have to go through, and the hassles they have to put up with from bean-counter management, and I'm not really surprised.

I recently had a medical situation where it was decreed that the simplest solution was for me to stay at home and have visiting nurses for a few days. I would much rather not have had the medical situation, but the visiting nurses were a very good solution to the problem....
