Alison, I am just a step ahead of Forward Yarns, Roger usually is quick to answer these questions for us. Here is his website with the chart

UK and US needle sizes are upside down. In the US sizing, 000 is about 1 mm and 00 is about 1.5 mm.

Can one knit with one mm needles, it seems a bit thin to me.

One can, but it is not really fun.

Also, as my eyes get older, it is more difficult to see those tiny stitches.

I knitted four small multicolored pouches, two with 000 needles and two with 0000 needles. I used two strands divided out of tapestry yarn with the 000s, and number 8 perle cotton with the 0000s.

Once you get used to it, it's not hard, but I am very near-sighted and have no trouble with close-up vision. At that size, a pouch about six inches across has as many stitches in it as a sweater body in a more usual gauge.

I was very happy to have bought some antique needles that had nicely shaped tips. I have several sets, but some have almost no shaping at all and are too thick tipped to be used easily, while some others are much too sharp. They don't file down with the emery cloth that I can find around here, and since I have a good set or two, I don't bother about the others.

Yes and add fine print to read the pattern as well. LOL

Tamar, I have knitted little tiny broches, on nice round toothpicks, but it was all a bit to miniature. Fun to do once, but I would not make a habit of it. In my little antique textile tools collection I had a set of long fine steel knitting needles. When my sister in law started to knit with beads I passed these on to her, since it made knitting that way so much easier. She was also knitting with a fine pearl cotton thread.
