The Jewish tradition says that it is `so many years to the Creating of the world`. Of course later there were interpretations that we really don`t know what a YEAR was in elder times .... but it is built upon counting generations in the Tanach =the old testament. mirjam

Mmmm, thanks miriam, reminds me of the original hebrew text (I think), which says God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh. but the hebrew word for 'day' also means 'period of time'. My father explained this to me a long time ago, he's very much interested in biblical subjects, and I don't recall that Hebrew word at the moment, it's on the tip of my tongue...

Hi mirjam,

Yes, it _was_ 'yom' my father spoke of, it was actually on my mind when I wrote that post but I wasn't sure. So, what does 'yom kippur' mean?

Hi mirjam

Do you physically ask people you think you hurt for forgiveness? And others of you in similar ways? How do you feel after such an exchange?

Be well,

David
