Size 50 knitting needles

Hi Everyone,

I just read the latest online newsletter from Lion Brand and they are selling a pair of size 50 knitting needles to make a scarf in a hour. They look way to big for what I would want to use, but then I thought I'd never see needles larger then 19.

Hugs,

Nora

Size 50 has been around a long time. I have one that's 40-50 years old. They were sold for broomstick lace. fay

i've had a pair of size 50s since 1972, when i was in college :) they're kind of clunky to knit with, but with a real chunky yarn (or about 5 strands of worsted) you certainly can do a scarf in an hour. they're also great for crocheting broomstick lace. a size 50 is abount a US 1". a 35 is about 1/2". lee

I have 35's for broom stick lace and size 50 for big bulky yarns. To make a quick baby blanket , use 5 strands of different colored worsted weight. Cast on 50 stitches. Knit in garter until 36 inches . Cast off. I can make this blanket in an afternoon with this size needle and the parents always love it because it is so fluffy thick. Coggie

Hi,

I had forgotten about the broom stick lace needles. I thought they were something new they were pushing, but glad some have used them.

Hugs,

My Dh made me a broom stick needle. The bought ones only had a small knob and as you know you have to hold the needle between your knees to use it. So he put me an antique drawer knob on mine and gave me something to hang on too. Shirley

This sound nice! How big is the finished blanket... and with needles that large does the blanket come out very lacey (ie big holes) or not? I've never used needles that large, so I'd be interested in knowing.
