Skills for a lifetime

This is just something neat that happened at work. My department is in front of the entrance doors, so I see everybody coming and going. A man came in to shop, he is probably in his late 60's. I noticed he was wearing a grey wool vest, worked in an overall moss stitch pattern with garter stitch edgings and button bands. He was a rather tall man, but the vest was amply long and fit him perfectly. I went over and greeted him and admired his vest, someone sure spent some time working on it and did an excellent job.....I asked him if his wife made it for him and he said *no, my 90 year old mother made it, she still makes me all kinds of things*. Well, that made my day. Just goes to show that these knitting and crocheting skills we learned are good for a lifetime of pleasure for ourselves and others! Marie and the cats

This sounded /read great !!! Thus both mother and son enjoy this skill , and i hope the son told his mother about the compliment you gave her. My friend from Jerusalem said the other day , that she got the impression that most knitters make things for others.... Thus this should be considered a Caring profession!!! An other friend called me to tell that by doc`s orders she needs a warm scarf , thus she wears the one i knitted her husband for his 60`s birthday ,, while another friend complained her husband wears the scarf i made her ,,,,, you might guess it both friends were `fishing` for a second scarf .... But Alas i have no time ,, the first one can knit thus i adviced her that i will give her instructions,, the 2nd .. can afford to buy one ... Yes Knitting , crocheting is a skill for a BETTER lifetime .... mirjam

I'm sure YOU made HIS day! Now he can tell his mother that someone noticed what she has done! You REALLY noticed it, since you went over to him!!! What a happy and encouraging message for him, to bring to his old mother! Aud ;-)

Hi Marie,

You sure did the right thing and yes, to me knitting and crocheting is for a lifetime. I know my grandmothers crocheted until they passed away as did my Mom. I still have things that my grandmothers made me and I would never think of parting with them.

Hi Auntie Nora! I know how you feel...I mean about grandma and her items. I cherish my needlework skills...they are truly valuable gift to me. I mean...first my maternal grandma, then mum, now me. It is my time to go on this relay. And you'd better believe I love every second of it. Best: Pirjo

Oh absolutely it lasts a lifetime! My Dad's oldest sister was a couple of weeks short of 102 when she passed away, and up to about 9 months before that (before she broke her hip and became very frail) she was still doing yarn work.... as well as walking, and swimming laps in a large pool. :o)

What a nice compliment for the gentleman to take home to his mother! That will/would make her day! :o)

Hi! Marie, oh my...I mean that was quite an experience. I would have fainted, for sure, if I had been there. I mean...that man has so old mother who still can knit...I admire her. I really admire her. My own grandma had to let the knitting go...well, many many years before she died. Her heart, you see, could not take it anymore. Best: Pirjo

I would image if you get started young enough you can also help you hand/eye cawardanation. I know my grandmother use to knit and crocheting. I am not to sure if she still does it, as I have not talked to her in a long while. Andrea

Maybe Andrea this is your chance to speak with your Grandma, and tell her that now you knit and crochet ... On my last visit with my OMA , she couldn`t talk much [ had a stroke], but we used signs , and i spoke into her eyes .... mirjam

I will have to look up her number. My Mom also mentioned that an Aunt on my Dads side of the family use to knit a few years ago so I may also look her number up as well. But I have a feeling that neither one knits or crochets much anymore, other intrests have taken up there time. But calling them to ask about it will not hurt. Andrea
