No, I work on a PC. I run two firewalls, three spyware/spybot detectors, and an anti-virus program, and my ISP uses an aggressive spamfilter. I haven't yet had a virus, trojan or other malware with this account/email address, and I can only remember one piece of spam getting through. My internet surfing is limited to maybe a dozen trusted sites, so the chances of anything getting through are pretty limited. On the other hand, I've had a few people that were sending legitimate mail to me that got caught in the aggressive filtering, and ended up either in the spamtrap or bounced back to them.

I had one account that I had to abandon last year, that I specifically kept for family and close friends only, and wouldn't you know one of the family members sent me an electronic greeting card, and sure enough, there went that email address -- I'm sure it got sold to a number of places, and from there to even more. So I don't accept those now either, along with anything that shows it's been forwarded.

With my Eudora software, I block all mail from people who constandly send me jokes etc. It goes straight in the carbage can. I am sure that most E-mail softwares must have some sort of set-up to black that kind of mail.

Right, Mail one E-mail at the time and not the whole list at the time. It does take a bit longer but it is just polite to do so.

I did it too, Noreen, I see perfectly what you mean! AND you are right!

I would not usually send thanks to anybody but the one person who deserve the "thanks"; now Nora!

but THIS time I felt that I would share it with the others, Since Nora has been SO nice and done so much for us. I see I'm NOT quite logic! LOL!

AND: I could instead have sent a tribute to Nora here!

I shall NEVER do it again!!! PROMISE! :-<

Aha! Okay, I was wrong. I just found out where and how to access the BCC. Amazing - I seem to learn something new almost everyday. ;>)

I found it another way - heh, heh - I went into "help" and amazingly enough - there were instructions on how to find it. How about that!

I use both OE and IE and have no problems at all. The Zone Alarm security suite makes all the difference. Shelagh

Unfortunately I have to use the MS apps because that's what my career has been in, so that's what's always been used at work -- I've heard the Macs don't have nearly as many critical patches and security updates to download. :)

ZoneAlarm is amazing, especially given that it's free. Other free ones that work well are Spybot Search & Destroy (can't remember the URL for that), AdAware

formatting link
and PestPatrol (can't remember the URL for that one either). They're all free, as are their updates.

No the Mozilla products work in Windows on PCs; they're just different from the MS ones. There are also Mac versions too.

Zone Alarm's firewall is free, but the security suite isn't. I used to use the AdAware, but don't need it anymore with the security suite. One thing the Security Suite does that AdAware doesn't, it doesn't even allow the spyware onto the computer. I used to clean the spyware everyday with AdAware, but it always came back.

The trouble with some of them (including Adaware and Spybot) is that there is so much coming out so fast, it requires regular updates, just like virus definitions. Some of the spyware is getting pretty sneaky. There are certain spywares now that, if any product tries to delete them, it intercepts it, and if any part of it is deleted or erased, it goes out to the site and reloads it again. I worked on a friend's recently that I swear had just about one example of everything out there on it -- it took eight hours to clean up. He had several of the sneakier ones, and it was quite open about it -- it would display a message saying something like "something on your system deleted a portion of xxxxxxxx, for your convenience we have reinstalled it." Some of them are bad enough that NOTHING will get rid of them, short of booting to the dos prompt and making changes from that before it can even go into Windows, and then cleaning the registry manually. Also, I found out that at least one of them is installed via "drive-by browsing" (you don't even have to click on anything, just go to the wrong site), and a couple via agreement by people that install certain music download apps -- his kids got into that, but naturally didn't read the fine print agreement that they had to click to agree with to register. Sure enough, in the agreement it said something to the effect of "by registering, I agree to permit download and installation of xxxxxxx".

With the proper security settings , Outlook Express is as good as anything else. With 3 email addresses from my IP, I only get 2 or 3 pieces of spam a day. The ones that I get come from a Yahoo email list, which means that either Yahoo is not secure or one of the people on the list has an addy grabbing bot. Don't put your email address out there for spammers. Until recently, spyders could only read first level headers, which made using a fake email to post to groups safe. Now they read second level headers, so if you use a reply to option, it is still possible to grab the addy even though the email address is not "public". Set up a free email account with something like Yahoo or Hotmail, use this address for "online" stuff except with companies that you know don't sell addresses. A few things that help with email security. Do not allow java scripts to automatically run, and don't allow pictures to download with email. Turn off the preview pane for email, use it only for newsgroups or not at all.

You're not the only one still connected to the net via a DOS computer. This box is DR-DOS running KA9Q, PCElm and SNews! We do now have a windoze box in the other room - it was given to me to use for my Guides but for personal use we'll stick with this one as long as we can.

Ray, what do you mean "to use for my guides"?

I am able to do most things I want in DOS, except sound editing and reading pdf files.
