warping along

Hi, I just purchased a second hand loom, and now I am panicing! Can anyone direct me to a good book, or good directions on the web on how to to warp the darn thing. It is a floor loom, 48" max. size of fabric, and I think a Jack loom. When I push on the treadle, only the shafts only go up. It has four shafts and was made in NZ. (that's where I live now). I tried to warp it by following directions in a book, but it was a complete failure. Thanks, KB Maybe I should stick to my knitting. :)

Don't give up! Warping is a ease, just extreamly tedius and boring when you want to be doing the actual weaving. I would suggest finding someone who can show you if at all possible, not even a video but a real live person. I have found when trying to explain anything about weaving it is so much easier when I can "show and tell". A perfect example is I just spent 30 mins trying to explain to my fiance the interaction between harnesses and patterns, something that would have taken 5 mins or so if I could just raise a harness or two. Unfortunatly I do not know that many books on weaving since I have learned through a class and most of what I have learned was through someone showing me, and of course the mistakes. >^,^<

Hi there, No need to panic it's not that hard once you know a thing or two. Warping the loom depends on quite a number of things first, what you want to weave what pattern materials etc here is one site that may help you

suggest a sample with a plain threading to get you going first..so what yarns have you got?? I'm not sure which way around you are trying to ''dress'' the loom front to back, or back to front, there are tons of sites online that may be of interest to you, under Dressing the Loom or How to warp the Loom or any combination of these words via google.

As Sheena explains, it is isn't easy to just warp it up, and a visit to your local guild may help you, I'm sure your local library will be able to put you intouch with some other guildmembers if not the actual guild for your area.

I do know of one interesting video, by Jason Collingwood, he is very detailed in one of his video's but again he doesn't show you everything.

for a start, you'll need to know what yarn you are going to use, how many ends to the inch, or wraps around an inch of a ruler, what size reed to get the sett correct, I warp from the back roller through to the front roller, a warp has to be made first...lol complicated I can help you if you like, with photo's etc via your email addy. Not saying it will work, but I've taught someone else to weave in this way with step by step photo's...
