Worser and worser

Despite wrist problems November was a productive month: five pairs of handknit (versus cranked) socks, a shawl, and a sweater, plus many muppets on the Barbie knitter, plus a cap and mittens to match an already-made sweater for the small boy.

Unfortunately life generally mistreats my bum wrist. I can tell that my Terry Thomas gap is spreading (look up scapholunate displacement if you want some interesting Xrays), my palm and several fingers now have chronic numbness, and both my grip and mobility have been falling off for the past month. I suspect knitting has little to do with this while "daily life" in the form of housework &c is really what's doing me in.

I have a January appointment with the orthopod but I will probably call tomorrow to see if he can order another MRI and see me sooner - if I need surgery I'd rather do it during this insurance year since I've already satisfied my deductible.

:o( That doesn't sound like a nice thing to have to go through, Wooly! I hope your doctor can do something about making it better as soon as possible.

Not good. Does it come and go, or is it continual? If it comes and goes, could it be related to neck position? I mention it because I have had fingers go numb and it wasn't the wrist, it was my neck pinching the nerves! I use a special pillow so as not to wake up with numb fingers.

Very sensible. Good luck.

Nah, this is a mechanical problem. I have torn ligaments in my wrist, which lets some of the little carpals at the base of the hand move about. The medial (median?) nerve runs between the two floaters, so obviously I've got some nerve compression happening, which isn't happy-making.

This happened last summer (2004) when I fell and broke my arm, but as I wasn't commplaining about it then nobody thought to check my wrist for any damage. The orthopod put my elbow back together well enough that I have nearly 100% RoM and I was happy about that - even tho we're talking about my "stupid" hand, its amazing the amount of daily activity one does with the off hand/arm.

So anyhow. I'm a bit miffed right now because my research suggests that the sooner corrective/stabilizing surgery is done the better the long-term outcome. Unfortunately, until about mid-September my wrist wasn't really bothering me - I had reduced RoM and reduced grip strength, but it didn't *hurt*. Then I tripped over a cat, caught myself on that wrist and OH MY GOD I thought I was goiing to faint, it hurt so bad.

So, a trip to the orthopod, an MRI, and a diagnosis of complete scapholunate ligament rupture with scaphoid displacement, and I'm probably looking at surgery by the end of the year (if his schedule allows - if not I'll find somebody who CAN do it before the new year, for insurance purposes). The numb fingers/palm I can deal with, but not being able to flex/extend my wrist without feeling as if my wrist joint(s) is full of ground glass is becoming tiresome, as you may imagine.

I'm *not* looking forward to being in a long-arm cast for six weeks, or to having an external pin system holding my wrist together (hard enough to sleep in a long-arm cast, add a spiderwork of hardware on the outside of one and I'll probably have to sleep sitting up in the recliner, blah), but the end result has got to be better than what I'm dealing with now. The physical rehab will be a bitch (that bicep tendon doesn't like to stretch, unfortunately) but I did it once, I'll do it again.

Anyhow, the guy's phone opens in about 5 mins, so I'm going to get another cuppa and grab my calender. I'll keep y'all posted if anybody is really interested :D
