Just a reminder, THIS coming Saturday, June 9th, is the THIRD ANNUAL WWKIP Day! (W orld W ide K nit I n P ublic Day) I am again sponsoring one in Watertown (Wilson county) (have to add the Wilson county, as TN has TWO Watertowns, the other being in Blount county!). JM2C, Hugs, Noreen
I'll be outside on my new garden swing in the front yard, since the DH is working today. Does that count? Working on a sweater for my new grand-nephew!
My grandfather taught my aunt to knit with two match sticks and a little bit of yarn when she was in hospital. True story. I've heard if from everyone in the family.
woman's wear sale day. I knew they were a big event in SF, but I had not realized it has gotten to be a big event in Walnut Creek. They bus women in from places like Fresno and Modesto! "Nordies" is the only department store that I could stand to spend several hours in. Anyway, DW needed new blue dress pants. Better to sit and knit (and get credit for being a good sport) than to wait and fidget. Terry has been working too hard. I guess she was a bit "shopping deprived" and over eager to do a bit of shopping.
There was this (very well dressed) old lady that said, "(She) learned how to knit in the convent in 1922 in France, and that I was knitting American style, and that I would be able to knit much faster if I would learn to knit Continental style!" She did not want to hear about knitting sheaths, because "Continental is the fast way to knit!" So, she grabbed the knitting out of my hands and proceeded to show me how to knit Continental style! I guess she was a little "knitting deprived" and over eager to do a bit of knitting. I bet she still runs her son's household.
By and large, the men waiting and fidgeting in the waiting areas showed much less interest in the knitting than the ladies who were shopping.
So Noreen... is this annual event on the same day every year, or the same weekend perhaps? It sounds like a neat idea. I hope your weather was good for this. :o)
Without thinking, I did participate in WWKIP day. My DDs wanted to go to the Pacific Science Center. I said, "Sure," as we have a membership (we make it pay for itself in less than a couple of months) AND, I plant myself on the provided benches with my knitting and let the girls "do their thing." I did have one woman come over and ask me what I was making, I showed her the picture, and she said I was a fast knitter. (Okay, if she says so) I had lots of people smile as they passed and realized I was knitting.
I don't know how public it was, but I worked on a hairpin lace shawl at a friend's house. I crocheted together the strips I had previously done on my hairpin "loom" and my friend was very impressed by how rapidly the shawl developed a recognizable shape. I even sang for them although, hopefully, they (friend and boyfriend) were too tipsy to remember this bit!
It is terrible that I complain about Michaels and JoAnnes, but have not been to all my LYS - YET! There I was waiting just around the corner, and did not think to walk over and check out LYS. Shame on me.

Oh, don't feel bad -- I haven't been to any yet. :) I knew about Thimblecreek for AGES and never went in. Then I heard that they had moved and a yarn store moved into where they were before. *shrug*
Is the yarn store there in the whole store that used to be Thimblecreek? That was a pretty big store. And especially big for a yarn store I would think. That definitely deserves a look see next time I am in that area.
