I knit the Kippah. The pattern I used came from here:

had seen this pattern in the past, but when a Kippalong was announced on the KnitList, I joined. My DH wasn't totally thrilled with the end result as the edge flips under and he feels that it is not dense enough. That being said, it fits very well. LOL Janise

Thank you, Mirjam! I didn't recognize the word "kipah", but when I followed the link to the pattern and read the word "yarmulka" I knew exactly what it was then. :o) The word is pronounced yamuka, right?

I have to tell you about something that happened years ago that just popped into my mind as I was typing this. My cousin (who had grown up in New Jersey after being born in Toronto... she moved back to Toronto in her 20's) was here visiting for the summer and one Saturday evening she happened to be looking out the window and said "I didn't know you had a Sinagog in town!" We don't, by the way... and I told her that. She said "But there is a man walking down the street wearing a yarmulka!" I looked out the window and burst into laughter. It was a gentleman belonging to the Roman Catholic church... in fact he was one of the higher-ups in the church... on his way to Saturday evening services. What she saw was not a yarmulka at all, but rather his pink bald head. LOL We never let her live that one down... teasing her every time we saw the same man. hehehe

*grin* Nora... here you are hoping for cooler weather while I'm enjoying seeing the summer finally arrive. True, I don't like it TOO hot, and definitely not humid... and I will not work with yarn in the warm weather, but I love summertime. I drive with the windows down all the time (unless it's pouring down in buckets), sleep with the windows wide open, and have all the windows open in the house ALL the time now. On really hot and humid days I sit with a fan on me, but for the most part I love it.

And now that we are finally getting the pool pump and skimmer fixed this weekend, I will be spending a lot of time in the pool to cool down too. Matthew and his friend Kyle get in long enough to get wet and say they are cooled off..... but I stay in (floating so that the top of my head is under-water) until my entire body temperature drops down a LOT and I am totally cooled down all over, not just on the surface like the boys. They both say they will get in and stay in longer when the pool water warms up some... I was even asked if I had priced a pool heater... NOT!!! hehehe We do have a solar blanket though, so I think it will be going on each time we're finished with the pool this year, and that should help keep the water temperature from cooling off too much. :o)

Gemini ,,, Yarmulka , is the Yiddish name , Kippa is the Hebrew name , Kippa in Hebrew means :` dome, cupola, cap, saddle, vaulted roof or ceiling , and skullcap,,,, YaRmulka is the yiddish word mm and yes you DO prononunce the R... For years it didn`t occure to me thar RC high rank wore Kippa [ or Kippot in plural] , untill the late pope visited Israel , he wore nice white Kippot while his Archibishops wore red kippot ... But i noticed they had a Button on top of their Kippot . mirjam

Thank you, Mirjam. I'm happy to know the correct pronounciation as I have only ever really noticed it pronounced without the R. Yes, the Pope and Cardinals do wear Skull Caps. There is actually a write-up about the different items of clothing that clergy wears on:

that describes the Skull Caps and other items of clothing in detail as well as when they started wearing them, and why. Kind of interesting as I hadn't really read up on it myself for a very long time. :o)Gemini
