OT: metal antique bread box, paint peeling Is it lead-based paint?

I have an antique bread box from National Can, looks to be from the depression era, and there are places where the white paint is peeling off. Is this paint the lead-based carcenogenic paint?

thanks

You can pick-up an inexpensive kit to test for lead at hardware stores or online. You simply rub a swab on the surface and note any color change. The kit will run about $10. It is my understanding that lead is a neurotoxin, not carcinogenic.

Lead paint is mainly a hazard if ingested. This can be by licking the paint, eating paint flakes or inhaling paint dust from sanding the surface.

It is not specificaly carcinogenic but high blood lead levels cause developmental problems in children.

You can buy a test kit or your local health department may be able to test it for you.

A chemical paint stripper is preferred for removal since it will not cause dust.
