OT: Trip to NYC

I NEED HELP!!!! OK, I get to go to NYC with DH again this year. We will be staying at the Marriott in the Financial Dist. (that's 85 West St.) way on the South end of Manhattan. Our flight arrives just before

9:00 AM on Thursday 17 Feb and we return the next day at about 8:00 PM. I will be doing the GrayLine HopOn - HopOff bus again and have purchased my ticket. Now, for the stuff I need help with. I must take my ticket voucher to the Visitor Center which is at 777 8th Ave. (btw 47th & 48th streets) so I know I will need to take a cab. I went to the NYC Taxi Comm. site and got the rates -- basically $2.50 to get into the cab and another $2.00/mile. What I want to know is how far it is from the hotel to the Visitor Center. I don't even -- HANG ON -- all the taxis now take charge cards IIRC so I don't need cash to pay the driver!!! That solves my first problem :-). Second problem is that I have NO IDEA what an appropriate tip amount would be. Is it similar to restaurants where you give a percentage of the total bill? If so what is the percentage for an appropriate tip? I just noticed that the Taxi Commission site has a FAQ so I'll go check that out but I would *still* like to hear from any of you who "do" NYC now and again. Thanks & CiaoMeow >^;;^<
