MAYBE going to NYC

Hi Guys, DH is going to NYC next week and I could go with him *IF* I can find something to do that will keep me busy for the day on Wednesday (Wed. 27 Feb.) and not wear me out too much. You have to remember that I have NEVER been to NYC and I have arthritis in both knees and hips and lower back so I can't spend hours and hours walking around. I know in a sort of general way what there is to do and see in NYC but I will only have 6 or 8 hours to see stuff. I can walk around for about 2 hours and then I need to sit and rest for about 30 minutes. DH will be in meetings all day with his 2 bosses and a bunch of lawyer yahoos. We would arrive on Wednesday 26 Feb. in the late afternoon and depart on Thursday in the evening. This means I would have to check out of my hotel and then keep myself busy until time to meet DH wherever we decide to meet. I'm not sure just what I would do with my luggage. Actually, we would probably pack everything in one bag and I would let DH take it with him since the other guys will have their luggage. So -- what shall I do? I know there is one or two people who live and work in The City so I'm hoping you guys could give me some sort of idea as to what I could do. OOOOO it would be nice to go to see the Firehouse Angel but I don't even remember where we sent her!! HELP please :-))). CiaoMeow >^;;^<

There's a Circle Line cruise that will take you (comfortably sitting on your rump) around the entire island pointing out the most important sights.

There is no elevator in the Statue of Liberty, so you will have to choose between just looking up at her from the outside, or climbing the bazillion stairs, which is extremely physical and nowhere to sit when you need to rest. Much better to just admire her from the tour boat or the Staten Island Ferry.

The Cloisters has a wonderful display of medieval needlework.

There's always much to do culturally, i.e., lunchtime concerts, etc., but you'll have to consult the locals on what's scheduled for that particular day.

It all depends on where the hotel is.

Tia Mary, if you will tell us what hotel he's booked at we can give you much more info on what's available to do. However, rest assured, you can never be bored for long in NY.

True, but I know our TiaMary likes stitchery, so threw that out there as an option other than the basic "architecture tour" that I'd recommend to a non-stitcher.

If there's still time a ride on the 5th Avenue Bus will show you some of the fabulous shops that you've read about in all the novels and that you've seen in all the movies.

Ok -- DH is staying at the Mariott Marquis located at 1535 Broadway. I don't want to go to a museum or anything like that because I would spend ALL my time in just the one place and be exhausted from all the walking and standing in one spot enthralled by the exhibits. Best I just walk up and down the streets (does that make MOI a street walker???) looking at people and taking a break in a small coffee shop as needed. I do rather like The Karen's suggestion of taking one of the boat trips that is offered or maybe I will check out Gray Line tours and see what they offer. THAT I can spend the whole day doing and I would only have to get off when I saw something I had to get up close and personal with. As for the luggage, being as we would only stay one night, DH and I can pack everything in one small bag and he can schlepp it with him. His bosses will have their stuff with them and we certainly wouldn't want him to look out of place -- LOL. OK -- gonna go see what the rest of the responses are. Thanks for this much so far & CiaoMeow >^;;^<

NO -- NO museums. I absolutely LOVE museums and zoos, etc. but I only have 6 or 7 hours and I would spend every last minute in one spot! I think I will look at the Gray Line site and see if they offer a hop on - hop off tour for Manhattan. That way I could sit on my butt as needed and just get off and walk around when the fancy strikes MOI. I KNOW they offer NYC tours because I have seen the funky commercials. What I would like -- besides meeting up if possible with any of our RCTN folks -- is to see B'way (the part that is the Great White Way), the Flat Iron Bldg. (I'm pretty sure that's the one that is triangle shaped and smack at one end of B'way), Empire State Bldg., Statue of Liberty, Peace Plaza (is that what the Towers location is now called) -- in short all of the touristy stuff that I probably won't ever have another chance to see again. I think Gray Line is likely the way to go if I am going to do a bunch of touristy stuff in just a few hours. VBS -- I wish I had more time but I'll take what I can get. I never even thought about the Gray Line stuff until I read The Karen's post about the boat tour! Thanks dear :-). CiaoMeow >^;;^<

The Empire State Bldg. is just about 10 short blocks from the hotel, but it's not a very exciting walk.

I very much doubt that you would be bored for a moment.

Enjoy it and think of me. I love that city.

Don't forget to use the services of the concierge in the hotel. I stayed there some years back and I know they are very helpful. That's what they exist for, so use them.

The Marriot is right on "The Great White Way" so that won't be a problem for you. As a matter of fact, they even have one of the old theaters right in the hotel. They left it in place and built right around it. For the rest of the places you mention the bus tour is best because if you tried to take public transportation you would have a problem getting around. Just so you know, New York has hills so depending on where you are walking isn't always great.

If that makes you a street walker, then you're in great company because I used to walk the streets of Manhattan regularly. I worked on 58th Street and

5th Avenue., I had a friend I worked with who lived right near me in Brooklyn. If the weather was nice, we would leave work and walk all over the place sometimes uptown to the Museum and more often downtown toward Macy's. We would then find a place to have dinner and take the subway home.

Yep, we did refer to ourselves as streetwalkers.

I have taken the Gray Line Hop On Hope Off tours in Hawaii, Savannah (twice) and in Washington D.C. and they are GREAT! The tours have a set route and the trolleys (or busses or whatever) just go round and round and round stopping at the same places all day on a set schedule. When you get to something you like, you hop off the trolley, do what you like and then go back to the same spot (or walk to another trolley stop) and hop on the next trolley that comes by. It's great because you don't have to go see stuff you aren't interested in, etc. and they are *very* reasonably prices. The tour I will likely take is their 01-AL (All Loops) tour for $44.00. This includes three loop tours - Downtown Loop, Uptown Loop and Brooklyn Loop. You get to use the Hop On Hop Off trolley for two days at that price, too. I'm going to have to google the hotel location to find out where it is. The Uptown Loop starts at 777 8th Ave. (between

47th & 48th) and the Downtown Loop starts on B'way between 47th & 48th so I need to see which is the one to start off with. My biggest problem is that DH won't be with me. I like having him along as my sherpa when we travel :-). He's the official bag & pack carrier and I'll have to do that myself -- LOLOL! I'll need to remember to take one of my tote bags with the shoulder strap so I have an easy way to carry whatever trinkets I happen to stumble upon in my tour of The City. I collect tacky haole tourista spoons & thimbles and I get thimbles for Janet, too. I'm sure they will have all sorts of tacky touristy stuff at the major "spots" and I will likely have a thimble from all of them that I have time for. Time to go google stuff. I'm not gonna believe I'm going until DH calls and says he has booked the flight (about $225.00 which is not bad all things considered) and gotten me my seat assignment. You'll know if this trip falls through -- LOL! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

That sounds great and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

For tacky stuff you won't have any problem. The hotel is I think on Broadway at 43rd St. You can get a taxi in front of anything in New York, and if you decide to walk from the hotel to the tour stop on 48th it's not far. The north/south blocks in New York are short. and the east/west streets are long. You'll be able to buy anything and everything right on the street from the vendors. and newstands at every corner. For more expensive tacky, there are shops right in the hotel that can provide that. I really believe that "honky tonk" might have been invented there, or certainly could be designated as one of the first. lol
