OMG how heart rending to be merely Foundling # ! So sad one of the last where it actually had his name and that his mother was buried when he was christened.

During some genealogical research, I recall reading about a foundling hospital elsewhere in England - they strongly felt that when a child was left there, that child was essentially being given a chance at a (hopefully) better life and that (to some degree) the privacy of the parent(s) that was to be preserved at the same time. This was especially true of girls made pregnant by employers or fellow servants. I think the "hospital" was in Manchester UK, but I could be wrong. We were trying to help a friend who lost the trail of her family at an orphanage. (Way too many William Smiths to sort out)
