Applique wreath questions :D

i'm doing a 12.5" block with a wreath on it, no pattern per se, just what i fancy putting on it...what size do i make the actual wreath part, what width bias would you use? i tried eyeballing with 1/2" and 5/8" and 3/4", hmmmmm, what would you use? i dont wanna cut any bias til i'm sure. what shade/tone of green do you prefer using? does it depend so much on the other colours being used for flowers etc or what other colours of green i'm going to use for leaves/stems and embroidered tendrils? gee, this is more questions than i was gonna ask originally. oh well, for all who make/wanna-make-one-day these blocks i'm open to any/all of your collective experience/ideas on these. jeanne*

I like lots of different greens mixed together and leaves made from those same fabrics, gives continuity and movement. I would also vary the widths, there are no straight lines in nature, I would not go as wide as 5/8" , for a relatively small block, it would be out of proportion for my taste. size -wise I wouldgo no larger than 8" tops 9" then wyou have some "breathing" room around the wreath. I like to do a paper mock up before I lauch into a project like this...cut pieces from paper same size as your applique will be and paste it all together.. Good luck can't wait to see what you come up with.

hee hee, i cant wait either, Mauvice. whenever i do something without a pattern to start with, oh!!! thats nearly always, i just wing it and usually comes out alright. i've not made a wreath in yonks though so thought twas time to ask for opinions. the wreath size will probably be about 7inch diameter, ballpark figure of course. i'll see when i get the bias cut and ironed ready to place it before i cut the exact size. i find this the trickiest part, once thats on, the rest is smooth as a frappacino...can you tell i'm downing an arvo coffee as i type, lol. so you think maybe 1/2" is wide enough for the bias, eh. hmmm, if i could find the last leftover stuff i used, would be useful, eh. sigh...back to the drawing board i guess :D. thanks for the input, Mauvice. jeanne*

In class we did 1/8" vine on a 12" blocks with leaves and flowers coming of that { Baltimore style }. It was an almost complete circle cut on the bias, it was quite easy considering I had done nothing like it before.

All these measured sizes. What if you don't have a plate, bowl, or saucer that diameter, and you have to actually draw the circle using a compass and long-forgotten junior high geometry?

If you need to eyeball a circle try this.. well.. its not really eyeballing. Attach a piece of string to a pencil. Attach the other end to a pin. Stick the pin in the center of the paper youre using to make a pattern and then hold the pencil upright to draw a circle, holding the string taut. The string needs to be half the diameter of the circle you want. HTH...and makes sense! Diana
