How to: Transfer text to fabric

Hello All,

I'm trying to transfer text (1/4 to 1/8" tall letters) to small pre-made draw string bags. Each bag has different text, and so far I have not found an efficient way to transfer the text. I bought a stamp kit, each letter is placed onto a holder then the stamp is dipped into ink and pressed onto the fabric. This works very well, but it is very time consuming! I have tried iron on transfers but they harden the fabric where the transfer is, and the transfer cracks after washing a few times. I have been reading about assorted print to fabric printers, but they all seem to need fabric cut to a sheet of paper size.

I know from reading the archives here you some of you transfer patterns to fabric, So I thought someone may have some ideas I have not thought of yet,

Thanks,

Have you tried using your computer printer? You can iron fabric to freezer paper and send it through. You'll have to think a bit to send it through with the fabric to be printed on placed with the correct side up or down, whatever. You'll want to carefully trim any sneaky ravels before you send it through. Let it 'set' for about 30 minutes. Heat set it with your iron. Test one and see how it goes and if it's washable enough to suit your project. Of course, you can use the sheets specifically made for this but, mercy, they are expensive. Polly

Thank you everyone for your replys. It's starting to look like i'm going to keep having to use the "create a stamp kit" for now. It seems that there should be a product out there for one-off transfers for lettering.

Art-Wear Iron on Sheets

You can always try a product like this - makes an iron-on transfer image. For text you would need to create an image of the text (type it in a drawing program text box and flip the image) as the image will be reversed.

Sulky makes fabric transfer pens....

The only drawback would be that you'd have to trace the lettering backwards. NAYY

Sulky makes transfer pens. You write on paper and iron onto fabric. Of course you will have to reverse the image of the letters to trace with the pens.
