My new project

Hi, I'm lagging lately, but wanted to show you what I've been plinking at. I'm "painting" with fabric, LOL. It's really fun and satisfying and I think it's going to turn out lovely. Any suggestions for what else to do with the scene? I plan a border that includes birds and small trees and such. Which is to say I'm going way overboard and making it guady and outlandish. I think it will match my style perfectly. ;)

Yes, yes! I want to know how you're doing it too. As to gaudy and outlandish, I wanna play. I see a tire swing hanging from the dark branch on the left. The rope for the swing could be a length of string, a little bit frayed of course. Something napping under the tree? How about a black and white cow? We still have strange stuff dangling from trees here since Katrina and you probably don't want a bathtub but maybe a kite that's been trapped? A bonnet? Carry on. Polly

LOVE IT! (Oops, sorry for shouting.) The tree reminds me a bit of an Alice illustration, the one with the Cheshire Cat curled up on a branch. Or if you want something less bizarre, I also imagine it with a lazy person in a garden chair, little table with a pitcher of lemonade, trashy novel... Roberta in D

I started this with some real study of what I wanted to do without doing anything. Sounds silly, but I just needed to think. Then I started drawing trees. Tree trunks, that is. And i made them all women. You can't really tell, but this tree is actually my Mom. T he trunk is her body, turned into a tree. I'm planning a series of trees using all the women I love or care about. Anyhow, I had a blast designing the trunk. I like to use commercial print fabric as much as I can, turning the design into "other things". So I hunted and found just the right stuff and then made the pattern out of freezer paper and Misty Fused it to the background.

I couldn't think what to do then and just left it. And dreamed the solution (I just love that), or at least the shape and look. I went looking for batiks and found just the right ones, one green mottled and one orange. I also had some pieces floating around that we e used for emphasis. I pinned the pieces on (all just freehand cut) and fiddled and then started putting them on with a dab of gluestick. Now I'm going back and Misty Fusing the whole thing down. The tree trunk is already sewn. I will stitch around the outside edges as much as possible and then I'll FH the whole thing to look like what I want.

Okies, that's it. Not much to t ell really. I don't know that I want anything in the tree. But I'm looking at a rock wall behind it, low, with a long shadow.

Anyhow, it's nap time for this insomniac.

Hugs (anotherone for you Karen, or even two :) )

Just got back from Vacation in Alabama. Found 2 different fabric stores down there thanks to Donna in LA and bought way too much fabric, as if that's possible :-) and some books for new projects which is good. Bought lots of baby type fabric for a diaper bag and baby quilt for my son and his girlfriend who are having a baby in October (my first grandchild so I probably can't make too much stuff for them) :-) Found a cute frog fabric I had never seen before so bought 5 yards of it (have no clue what I will ever make with it), and some cool flowers and sky type fabric I will use for postcards and such (although if I make postcards only I will never use up this purchase). Good to be back from the beach to the snow we found when we got home (yes it is april and it should never snow in april where I live!)

Only 1700 messages to look over so this will be a long reading day.

That is very cool Sunny!! How creative of you to make trees to represent the women in your life. What a neat idea. I'll keep watching the posts.

If you come to NQA in June, I'll be happy to help you buy more. That way, I can fondle it and not have to buy any. Ya, right! Gen
