news from our new home

I was excited to receive 140 posts from this group tonight. Of course it had been a month since I had checked but so glad the numbers are back. Sometimes after several days I would only receive 5 or 6 posts. To be honest I stopped checking because so few were arriving.

I need to tell you about our very busy summer. After Mom died in May of 2012 we began to think it was time to downsize. In November we bought a townhouse near our son and his family (an hour north west of our home). We started de-cluttering and doing some maintenance getting the house ready to put on the market. We also prepared the townhouse by having new floors installed and the entire interior painted. We planned to list the house with a realtor June 1st thinking we would have at least the summer to wait for a sale. In late May our neighbor asked if we still planned to sell the house because their friends were looking for something in the neighborhood. The friends really liked the house and didn't quibble about the price. They had already sold their house and wanted to move right away. Three weeks later we had moved!

The movers commented that we didn't have very much clothing or furniture but we sure had a lot of boxes. Those boxes were filled with my husband's books and my fabric and antique quilts. I gave away a lot of fabric but kept enough to last several lifetimes!

The lower level of the townhouse is my studio with a hide-a-bed in one corner just in case someone wants to spend the night. I treated myself to a sewing station from Tracey's Tables. It is so nice to have the machine inset into the top of the table. The square footage of the new studio is about the same as the old but there isn't as much storage in other parts of the house where I used to stash fabric. Everything quilt related must live in this space.

My husband will be retiring sometime early next year. He goes to the office two days a week and works from home the rest of the time. Without yard work or maintenance to do on the week ends we are having fun exploring the new area and spending time with the grandchildren. There are three good quilt stores within twenty minutes of the new location just in case I run out of fabric.

Congratulations that you and DH made it through all of that and both didn't arrested for domestic violence. Wow. My money is on your finding creative ways to store fabric. To begin, you can hang quite a few yards beneath your winter coat and some under towels in the guest bathroom. You'll find places. Polly

Hope you'll be very happy in your new home Susan. The sale/buy seems to have happened very easily. Well done. I don't think I can ever downsize ... after our separation, I moved into a three bedroomed bungalow - and it is *full* (to bursting, some might say!!)

Yes, it is lovely to have to the posts flowing again: small numbers each day, but *very welcome.

Congratulations on your new home. Not having to list and stage is a blessing even if it requires a move before you are quite ready. Donna in Bellevue

Sounds like you found the perfect buyer. That is so great! And no "staging" or open houses to deal with - bonus!

Your new place sounds just perfect for the two of you. How nice to have a new sewing table too. It is so great to have the machine flush with the table top.

Enjoy that home and retirement! marcella

Sounds like you'll be happy in your new home! Downsizing is difficult, but at least you had your priorities straight - quilting, books etc.! We love our townhome - also with no yard work winter or summer! I just wish we lived closer to our sons, but we are happy in our area.

Susan quilt> I was excited to receive 140 posts from this group tonight. Of course

Howdy! Good for you, Susan L.P.! Best wishes on the new digs. Have you finished unpacking? Find anything you don't recognize (always have in one of our moves )? Met the neighbors?

Susan T - good to see your post. Was wondering about you the other day; is the van loaded for heading south?

Cheers! Ragmop/Sandy

I don't check the newsgroup often enough! I've become the website person for my guild, and getting it reorganized is a chore. We're starting to do all the pre-Florida jobs, and will be heading south a bit early this year. Our younger son and his wife are coming there for 2 weeks, arriving 2 November. She hasn't visited Florida before, and has a long list of "it would be nice to visit if we have time" items. I'm looking forward to spending the extended time with them.... I'm quilting as usual, but lately I've been finishing quilts for my guild's community quilts program. Lots of members like to piece the tops, but not do the quilting, add the binding and label, so I've been helping with the backlog. The ladies layered and basted about a dozen quilts a couple of weeks ago, so I'm helping to get them completed and distributed to the many places we support. Our group sent 24 quilts to the flood victims in Calgary too!
