Quilt nights - do you sew or talk??

Just had our Tuesday evening "bitch & stitch" session - that's DH name for it, I like to refer to it as my quilting night. Small group tonight as it is cold and wet outside and others didn't quite get as far as the door. We talked about everything and nothing. Had show and tell by one of the girls that attended a 9 day quilting seminar and learnt lots of new skills - we try to get as much info as possible from her as well as samples of fantastic fabric. Two of us (there was 4 in total) felt need for cake so made some. So I can honestly say not much sewing was going on.

How about everyone else - do your quilting nights become a chat, eat and occasional sew fest or are you all dedicated workers?

Our group has met for 4 years now, and we've only had 1 dedicated sewing night. The original idea was everyone would bring hand sewing to do, but only a couple of the members are hand sewers, and they decided they wanted their hands free for eating. :)

We always do a show and tell, though...

I don't belong to a small quilt group nowadays - it dissolved several years as people's lifes changed. Full time jobs, cross country moves, family needs, etc. . . Sigh . . .

Today, a friend and I have 'quilt night' occasionally. We generally hand quilt and watch video's.

We here in the cornfields of Central Illinois are dedicated workers. But then we don't do this at night. I think I'd be a bit more inclined to chat and eat at night.

A few of us in our large quilt guild meet on Wed mornings at the home of the one member that has a living room large enough to spread out a quilt. It is very casual -- come or not - bring your lunch or stay just a few moments. We usually have sewing to do but many times it is a critique of colors, layout of squares or "help, what should I do for a border". If I have received a new swap or RR I take it so everyone can enjoy.

I think the really important thing we do is to get new ideas and energy to go on with our lives. Everything from vacations to children or grandchildren having family problems to friends who are ill gets mentioned -- I guess it ends up as a 'quilting bee' without the frame.

I belong to a "mini-group" that meets every other wednesday from 8-10pm. Sometimes we all have our machines going, sometimes it's a "finish binding" nite. We do drag-and-brag for the first 15 minutes and then get to sewing. We talk while we work. We meet for two hours and it's usually a very productive evening. There's only 5 of us in the group, but it works well for us.
