Think with me

The Wounded Warriors quilts I've made have all been red, white and blue. It's crossed my mind that while that is cheerful and patriotic, maybe it is not such a great choice for a quilt that we would hope will be used later and somewhere. Probably the quilt colors need to be masculine. Soothing? Cheerful but not dazzling? Gray and blue seems good but since this part of the South has never agreed to the Civil War papers, I don't think I can do those. Surely gloomy dreary is not good; wonder if *I* can do subtle? Think with me. Polly

Burgundy, forest green and a rich dark blue, plus a little gold or tan to lighten it all up (and might even evoke a thought of military braid?) would seem to me to be wonderfully masculine (though we must remember that there are many females in our forces nowadays). . I once (reluctantly) agreed to make a quilt for the son of a dear friend, to celebrate his graduation from law school. So I asked what his favorite colors were, and she said black and grey. Ech! So I bought about 16 different grey tones from almost-white to black, and added a pop of intense turquoise. Bargello design, called it "Shades of Grey", seemed appropriate for a lawyer.

You could go darker with the red & blue -- burgundy and navy, for example. Off-white or pale gray or tan instead of white. Maybe some dark green. Add a touch (or more) of gold. Or shade the red to orange and the blue to purple. Or earth tones -- rust, brown, dark green, gold. This one has lots of earth tones, but I don't consider it drab

Hummm, blues & greens come to mind. That would be what "I" would like for you to make for me in a nice K size, just in case you are thinking of making one for me! Barbara in SC

My nephew's grad quilt was scrappy blue, green and tan. Masculine but not gloomy.

Polly, a guild I used to belong to made quilts for a veterans home, not old= er veterans, but young guys with war related mental health issues. One nig= ht a couple of the men came with the house managers to pick up their quilts= and one of them said he didn't really want red, white and blue, he had had= enough of the military, he really wanted the Red Sox quilt someone had mad= e. Then the man who ran the house said, they like anything Nature related l= ike moose, bears, etc, or sports.=20

Just another way of thinking about this subject.

Whatever moves you for the quilt design in whatever colours appeal to you - if you aren't happy with your project from the beginning then the quilt won't be a happy one when it leaves your workroom. You could always develop a method of inserting a patriotic fabric star in the backing to accent the label area if so inclined. Barnyowl
