Finishing off Leather sewing (with a machine)

Hello

I do a fair amount of leatherwork as a hobby. I recently procured a heavy duty machine that allows me to sew leather about 5/16" of inch thick total. My question is, how do you finish? I have been led to believe that sewing bacwards is a bad idea, since leather needles actually cut holes. I have been finishing by manually tying a surgeons knot with the two thread ends by pulling through to the unfinished side.

For those of you who sew leather with a machine, how do you finish?

Thanks

Scott

I back stitch. But I don't use leather needles, just a heavy duty sharp.

Same here. I hand crank the machine though to make sure I hit the same holes. OR I pull to the back, knot and add a dab of glue. I never stitch hems, just glue them down and hammer with a wooden leather mal. I also do not use leather needles.....just a fine sharp needle. Size 12 sharp for garment leather and 14 sharp for moose and deer hide.
