Irked about previous request for SM manual

It's almost enough to make me not want to be helpful -- or not trust anybody's motives to be pure -- any more.

Someone posted here a few weeks ago wanting a SM manual for a SM they had (which I also have and love). Well, I happened to have a copy and they asked me if I could send them a copy. They wanted me to mail it, and I said that I was really bad about mailing things and that if they had a fax number I could fax it to them. They said that was okay and gave me a number.

Well, as it happens, my life has been crazy since June and I told them it might be a while, and they reminded me about it and I apologized and said that while I was sure it was in one of 3 or 4 places, I really didn't have the time to dig back into where it was, but I would do it as soon as possible, but it would probably have to be on a weekend.

After waiting about 2 weeks and having sent me 2 reminders, I got a terse, semi-nasty "forget it" type of response.

Here I was thinking I was going to help out someone who had just gotten a machine and wanted the manual, and I guess based on that response they wanted the manual to be able to list in on Ebay or something and say it came with a manual.

GRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!

if you do TinyURL.$450 Buy It Now, and I paid $129 for it at the local SM store at least 3-4 years ago. *shaking head*

Some people have exaggerated ideas (either that or pie in the sky hopes) as to what their machines are worth. I see similar pricing all the time on eBay. I suppose the real test is whether or not it sells and whether or not it the buyer actually PAYS for it. =20

I hear you! I posted here at about my Pfaff. I got a message months later asking for the manual.

"It would be simple for you to scan each page and email it to me."

No it won't! (I guess I'm less helpful than you) Anyway, the issue was moot since I don't have a scanner (or the manual either), I just couldn't believe someone would send that - not a question, just a demand.

I just can't believe that, what nerve! I remember I once asked where I could find/buy a manual for my singer 15-88 and someone pointed me to a few sources, which was all I ever wanted.........but to ask someone to make an effort so he/she doesn't have to pay a few dollars? and you don't really even know them......not even a regular from the group? What an A*S.

I looked at that ebay ad, I wouldn't pay that much! Especially not since that person is saying its industrial strength........I highly doubt it is.

Sorry that had to happen to you, don't let it bug you too much.

How old is this machine? It looks very similar in lines to my 30yo White (which is currently awaiting my kind attention, as it seems to have seized up sitting on a shelf in my climate-controlled studio). The seller would seem to have accidentally added an extra zero to the asking price.

I'm the person seeking the manual in question and am obliged to respond, since my name was attached to the original request to pay for a book or a copy (albeit in another newsgroup) and Melinda has "gone public" in this NG without first contacting me personally about her hurt feelings, which are based on misconceptions. A private email was in order.

I sought help in locating a manual for my XL-II and she responded positively, but said she had to dig for it, but she "knew where to look". No answer lster, and I did a routine follow-up. Heard back how busy she is and we all can relate to that, but it is was on her "to do list". Perfectly valid, and I consider she's doing me a favor, even though I'm paying. I'm not upset by her lack of action then, or ever. I offer also to barter a copy of the Maintenance Manual for the machine if she's interested, in lieu of cash. No response.

I gave it another week; no answer. Still no problem with me, but I really want to use that little gem on my bench, and I located a book in Australia. I order same and tell Melinda by email that she can take her hunt for the manual off her "to do list" on my account and said "Thanks anyway". My note was brief, and apparently misinterpreted because of its length. I regret that. "Semi-nasty" characterization is unwarranted.

Her saying my wanting the manual may have been to help sell my machine on eBay is conjecture and pure fiction. It is NFS there or anywhere.

I hope Melinda's unfounded mistrust of my actions and motives won't diminish thr own and others' unselfish and helpful contributions to this NG.

Well, in my opinion, for whatever that is worth, you should have been willing to have her send it to you and you pay the shipping. You might have gotten it sooner and all of this wouldn't have happened. Also, I might add, if she were to fax it to you, it would cost HER and not you. (Just a slight observation on my part.) Also, I've been through a lot lately and I just get so tired of hearing about people apparently trying to take advantage of someone else. If I'm out of line, I apologize right away, but, like I said, I've been through a lot lately and it has been more than my missing son that has "hit" me. Go ahead and hate me. At this point, I really don't care. Everyone else, please excuse my rant. Marlys in Indiana

I'm a little confused. There were two stories about people asking for manuals, but I thought in Melinda's case, she responded to his request, he did ask for it to be mailed, and was paying, but Melinda said she would prefer to fax it.

And what's the giveaway that he's the person selling the machine on e-Bay? I have to admit I've never dealt with e-Bay, so I might be missing something here.

I would like to think that there's just a miscommunication but maybe I am a hopeless optimist!!

It's an 80s machine, I believe they told me, and given how he is pushing it as "industrial strength," I doubt he added an extra zero.

It was crazy. I mean, I was offering to do him a favor and he is trying to demand that I do it *NOW* and thought that offering me $10 would make me do it faster. He must think I have nothing to do but sit at home and eat bonbons or something.

Oh, I am sorry and ask your foregiveness if I falsely accused you, and I am glad that it wasn't the case.

My daughter wants my machine, which I am not giving up, and I keep scanning Ebay for them regularly, and the timing of it looked altogether too fishy combined with what the description of the article said.

But "As far as I am concerned, you can take it off your to-do list" with no explanation of having found another book or anything is semi-nasty in my book even if it is not in yours, although if you say you didn't mean it that way, I will believe you, because I know that sometimes things can be misinterpreted.

I am a full-time-working, job-retraining, homeschooling single parent of four people and I just don't have that much time to dig to the back of my storage stuff very often, and nagging just doesn't make me find time any faster.

He offered to send it to me and pay the shipping, but I said that it would be easier for me to fax it -- I get 2.5 cents per minute long distance and have a fax machine here, and mailing it involves finding an envelope and going to the post office (read: 45-minute wait) to get it weighed to get it mailed.
