Olympic skating costumes

Anyone else wish they would have been consulted about some of the ice dancing costumes? Aaaargh, too much "flesh", too many sequins and rhinestones, too many feathers, too many boys dressed like girls, and WAAAAY too much makeup...

Looked like they all went to the same Sluts-R-Us & Pimps-R-Us. I remember when Tanya Harding was severely criticized for her décolletage -to-the-navel costume but it was MODEST compared to some of the latest batch. And I know, there's a different mind-set for ice dancing and figure skating, but still...

Grumble, just getting old I guess...

It's not just you and it's not an age thing either. ;) What bothered me too was that some of the costumes didn't really match the music choices. Now, the couple from the US and the Russian couple I thought were great in that regard. And I liked that both those guys looked like Guys!!

I found myself distracted the most by the guys' costumes. There were flutters and flounces and drapes in places that didn't flatter male costumes I thought. Just came off as....well....kinda girly. :( I say, put the guys in stuff that will show off those marvelous thighs they all have. lol

Looking at a few of the women's costumes..... Well I did kinda feel like I needed to look for the slot to put the quarters in. lol Makes you wish you had stock in flesh colored lycra huh?? (Oh! and could we have tried to match that a little better on a few of them?? A couple almost looked like the suits were designed (and flesh colored mesh bought for) different skaters, with much darker skin tones. That was really distracting. Made the costumes scream "COSTUME" rather than meld with the performer and the music.)

Here's hoping the costumes tonight for the women's figure skating are more fun!! Meet ya on the couch. Comfy loungewear and fluffy slippers are a must. :)

.=2E.

My local paper had an article about this which mentioned the tendency for wardrobe malfunctions. One skater has a costume with what can only be described as a strap going across a critical area. (It's 4 or 5" wide, but It Is A Strap.) Costume was altered. Did she try it on, wave her arms, wear it for a 5:00 am practice session? Nope. So guess what happened at a big event, on camera!

I missed that, like I didn't see Janet Jackson's OOPs at the Super Bowl? But I totally agree with Sharon and Beverly. Too much flesh leaves nothing to the imagination or mystique as women should always have, in my opinion, of course. some of the men's costumes were ridiculously effeminate. Emily

Whew, what a relief! ;-)

Agreed, but don't get me started about the music choices!!! And the loopy beads on the breasts of the woman from Ukraine, what the heck was that all about??? Egad! Just totally unflattering.

Oooooyeah. I don't object to a few spangles, this is "theater" after all, but some of the guys must have really squirmed getting into those prissy outfits.

Kinda reminded me of your fish costumes. ;-þ

Right!!! And don't forget to feature those lovely gluteus maximi, either! ;-)

Yup! And I agree about the "flesh-colored" mesh, some looked like they must have been "off-the-rack" rather than custom, the color was so bad.

Looking forward to it, big glass of Merlot and fluffy white dog here. ;-)

And I think some of the designers substituted garish for theatrical. Some of the mixtures looked like someone just reached into a barrel and combined whatever they pulled out!

In my estimation, your hope was granted. There were a bunch of really lovely outfits tonight. I was surprised at the top Russian woman's (Irina Slutskaya) costume choice, until I heard the announcers say that pants for women's figure skaters are now allowed. However, I don't think they added much flair to her program, which is too bad, as her skating was outstanding. The first American girl (Kimmie Meisner) had a beautiful backless outfit, and the second one (Emily Hughes) also was beautifully dressed in sheer long-sleeved navy blue. I wasn't as fond of Sasha Cohen's, but it worked well for her style and music. I think she skated a spectacular program. All in all, very pretty, mostly appropriate, and no flashing "I'm for Sale" going on. JMNSHO, YMMV

Oh good! Thank you for the marvelous report. I'm sad to say that I missed the whole thing. Made the mistake of getting too comfy on the couch after 2 days of up at weird hours (the kids have had a really disgusting cold.) I fell Very Asleep on the couch somewhere around 7:30. :( Mike woke me up at

10 and said "the kids are in bed, now you need to go too." lol I stumbled down the hall and zonked back out. I think I did a good job because I didn't stick my thumb in my mouth and demand to be carried. heh heh

We're not the only ones aghast at some of the ice dancers' costumes. This CNN.com article calls them "Halloween on Ice"!

thanks for that Doreen!! That was a great article. I loved the "you should wear the costume. The costume shouldn't wear you!" lol And there were some skaters out there the other night who were being worn!!!

It will be shorts and T shirts here in Australia - we'd be a bit hot in our slippers in summer! I've had a giggle about some of the men's costumes. They wouldn't be out of place at mardi gras, which is a huge gay parade through Sydney that will be on in a couple of weeks!

Oh yeah, there were some very odd, and some very ugly costumes out there, IMO. When the Female from Ukraine came out with that ensemble with tassels on the bosom, the NBC TV commentator remarked on it. She said it was very close to the limit. She stated that the rule is the costume must be "athletic" in nature, but could be styled to compliment the music. Very few costumes fit that description. There were so many unflattering reports of this topic, I look forward to seeing how the skaters come to the

I have the skating on tape and watched again closely the gal with the strip across the breast....and I didn't see any "wardrobe malfunctions" in any way. Not that I liked the costume or am defending it....but I watched with a critical eye and there was actually more coverage than the strap suggested....it was only a design detail. Perhaps to the casual observer (reporter) it was more of "wishful thinking." In any case...costumes are like art and subjective....some good, some dreadful mistakes. I too didn't like the men in the goofy skirt thingys. However....my favorite thing to do is try and figure out how the skaters get into them. Some you can see the zipper or whatever...some I still can't figure out. My my mind is constantly working out the constuction details. I HATE it when the rear end is highlighted by a panty that wedgies. And, I prefer the women in dresses. I believe the powers that govern skating are ruling for a trend in more conservative, non-outrageous outfits......at least that's what the coaches here have told me. Also, the costumes should "convey" the music theme but not be like a costumed character. Joy in Michigan

They seemed to be modeling after the ballroom dancing contests where garish and tawdry have become the operant conditions. That combined with the showgirl makeup is really distracting from the skating I think. I don't even mind revealing but some of those costumes looked downright ridiculous. Honestly, I was reminded of one of the old Carol Burnett shows where she did the Scarlett O'Hara routine wearing the drapes..... AND the drapery rod!

If you re-read my post (where I mentioned the boob strap get-up) you might see that I mentioned that costume, AND an article that referred to wardrobe malfunctions.

I did not state that the mentioned costume had suffered from this.

Hi Karen, Sorry, I didn't save the post....but it isn't a big deal anyway. I wasn't worried about it or attacking you in my response. Like you say, I must have read it wrong...because I did assume that costume had "malfunctioned" from the article report. And it quite possibly did. But I didn't see it. Perhaps whatever costume the writer was refering to had it's mishap "not on primetime television coverage." Hope I didn't offend you. Joy
