The Singer 404 is all metal, gear driven (no belts to slip) slant-shank machine that is a straight stitch only. It uses class 66 bobbins and regular universal needles. You can sew through anything you can fit under the foot. I've had several 404s, was down to 1 earlier this summer but am now back up to 4.

Price depends on condition and what comes with it. I just had one given to me. But the price was right :) -- given that 'right off' it needs a major cleaning (it's totally filthy inside and out) a good oiling, removal of old gear grease and an application of fresh, the bobbin winder and rubber foot bumpers need replacing, as does all the wiring. no manual, no bits, just the machine in a cardboard box! But that's OK as I can handle the rest of it including the new wiring.

A local appliance store sells used SMs that have been refurbished & totally gone over by an out-of-town SM repair person.... The last time I saw a 404 in there, it was $150. I have seen them go for $50 & up on eBay, again depending on condition and what it comes with (i.e. case, attachments, manual, etc)
