The funky forties!

Ok, I shall try to cut a very long story short...

I'm doing a "Kate".

I'm managed to not go to University but have got myself into a Uni drama society as a Sound engineer. "What's she going on about?" I hear you cry! Well, I'm also helping out with the costumes. This is a summary of what we're doing:

Titus Andronicus (Shakespeare) but set in the 40's. In America. But being "Filmed" but a film crew because they're making a film of Titus set in the

40's. In America. Are you still with me? Obvious things follow, death, lust, Tommy guns and cool costumes. Something like that anyway.

But that's besides the point. Sort of.

Can anyone suggest pattern numbers that I should get hold of? Does anyone want to donate patterns?

The other thing is, I need a knockout outfit for the fundraiser in March. Any suggestions for that? Everything is appreciated!

Charlie.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!

Good for you! I managed to do an MA without ever doing a BA! Did the Teacher's certificate at Durham first time I was a student rather than the degree course, so I wasn't really a uni student...

Not me! *I* understand perfectly!

Inevitable... 'P

Not it isn't...

See! You need costume ideas! Just ask yer auntie...

Pop over to the Vogue web site and look at the Vintage Vogue patterns: there are some lovely re-issues of several patterns, done by Norman Hartnel and the like, for Utility clothing WITH STYLE! :D There is also a zoot Suit for the blokes... OK, they ARE expensive, BUT you can re-size quite easily, and do several things from one pattern. I haven't got any 40's patterns myself, ot you'd be welcome to borrow them.

Try Vogue 1367: it's the one I did for my sister for Christmas (it's the Bronze Slinky Number on my web site, in the Posh Frocks list). It's an Easy pattern, and a stunner. I beaded the front of the bodice.

re: your 1940's Titus Andronicus... Vogue has been doing reissues of resized patterns from the 1940's for women. Don't forget all the resources at

If you're costuming men, please read about the zoot suit riots before choosing to use zoot suits as a costume. It's still a highly charged subject in some parts of the US, and may be misread in other parts of the world, too.

Thanks for the info, it's very interested. I have to say though, that there will *defiantly* be zoot suits involved. Not only do they have the right image, but from reading this, the fit in a better way. Titus is a VERY violent play, bringing it up to date I've no doubt will make it even more violent! (I've yet to see the script). I'm just wondering where I'm going to get all the fabric from to make them!

Croft Mill! They always have good bargains on suiting. Details on my Fabric List, in the usual place...

Now Kate, you don't think I'm so dense as to not get their catalogue every times it's released do you? BF does as yourself, goes through with a red pen and circles the mistakes...

Now, I wonder if we bought a fair bit from them, if they'd throw in some bolt ends for good luck. I fear the start of the begging letters. Apparently we're writing to all the tailoring shops in London and the like to beg their ends of bolts. This should be fun!

Write and ask - or phone them. The worst they can possibly say is NO!

Kate your posh frocks are beautiful. I really liked the 'slinky number'. Your sister looks wonderful in it.
