I guess I just have knee-jerk reactions to "come see my fabulous site" postings. Something about their tone and intent just makes me want to hit someone. Having one set up for vanity rather than commerce somehow doesn't change how offended i am by them.
Most sites aren't fabulous or worth the time it takes to look at them. I think the Artisan site is exceptional. They have some in-depth information on things like yeast and flour. There are good recipes, too. I never really thought about it being a "vanity" site.
Had you bothered to look at The Artisan you would see that there are no advertisements, no commercialism at all. Everything is free. We pay for all costs from our own pockets.
My "knee jerk reaction" is to simply call you a jerk. My second reaction was to pity you. Why not send a note asking why we post and have posted for 8 years now, and why do we spend the time and effort ton the site, and why it has become a boon for both bakers and cooks, and why people from around the world find it helpful. Vanity? You my friend need to look in a mirror to see the problem.
I was surprised and offended by Mr. Jorgensen's comments, so I have taken up valuable space hereto respond in kind. To all but Mr. Jorgensen, I am sorry for my curt responses.
I'm not vane, i'm just bitter, and averse to advertising. I'll see your
8 years on usenet and raise you 12.
I was wrong about your site but I'm still generally offended by that sort of post.
I apologize for accusing you of crass commercialism, but i don't see why you needed to tell us to visit your fabulous site. I'm sure there are people who appreciated it, and I'm not one of them.
It's laudable to want to help educate people but this is something i lost interest in years ago. It's a rare occasion when someone actually wants to master a new skill or understand a new concept, and when that happens i try my best to angle them in the right direction and give them the right set of conceptual tools for the job. Sometimes it pans out, sometimes it doesn't.
I would have never had a problem with you or your site if you'd found a way to adhere to standard usenet etiquette. That being, if it were somehow relevant to a current discussion and addressed an expressed search for information. It's also perfectly alright to stick something unobtrusively into your signature.
Your posting would have been appropriate in the form of an opt-in email distribution or would also be accepted on many web forums that explicitly sanction this sort of advertisement. Usenet is a very different place from either of those, and has different accepted rules due to a very different history and culture.
It's the "hey, look at me" format coupled with the "look at this great thing i'm offering you" attitude that rubs me the wrong way. I'm sorry if i've shocked you by being the first person to express this to you.
I'm sorry that I won't be helping you fulfill your need for external validation. I'll try and ignore you in the future.
How long have you been reading this group? Jerry's been posting this kind of message on this group for at least 4 years (which is how long I've been reading it).
It's really too bad that you let a knee jerk reaction deprive you of a fairly interesting and useful website.
Even worse, you didn't even bother to go *look* at the site, you just assumed it was a commercial site (and I'm sure you know what happens when you assume....).
If it had been the same post with a personal website address at a commercial ISP would you have been offended? It's the same thing, it's just that domain registrations have gotten so cheap and easy that lots of people have their own domains.
You really should look before you stick your foot in your mouth.
Jerry is so kind to take the time to "give" anyone information if they decide to take a look. I've taken a look a number of times and I like his site. Jerry, I like your site! So many people have personal sites, hoping to give a little of themselves, me included; perhaps it is a vanity, but it is most usually coupled with a feeling of wanting to share with others of like mind. Eric, I know from your postings that you like to share and give also. Now, say you're sorry! Dee
Never argue with an idiot. They bring you down to their level and beat you with experience. Your site demonstrates a love of life, the objector, a sour, bitter view of same. Were I at a party guess who I would most like to talk with?
