A quick question

Kindness to your customers will go a long way. Some customers come to your store just to get a lift in mood -- to buy themselves a little present (a handful of beads is a good cheer-up). I go to my bead store after I've gone to the dentist, for instance.

If the sales staff was unkind to me, I would never do this. ~~ Sooz

Absolutely! This is something that can't be too heavily emphasized. There are a significant number of people out there with negative *physical* reactions to incense or other strong odors, ranging from "raging headache after 20-30 minutes" all the way up to "can't even come in because the sinuses clog up so badly". Burning incense in your store is like telling these people that you don't want their business. Keep it *clean*, then you won't have to worry about what it smells like!

Hobby, fun, for sale, for giving away - you name it. Beading is a huge thing these days. The market for beads is pretty healthy - the market for finished work is very, very competitive.

Exactly - and if you end up making something up and it turns out to be very wrong, that can bite you in the butt later. Not good customer service.

vj found this in rec.crafts.beads, from Kathy N-V :

]I strongly suggest that your MIL offer a frequent purchaser discount program. ]Giving a discount to someone who purchases $50 or $100 worth of beads at a ]time will get them to return and along with the instant gratification, will ]make your MIL's bead store an attractive alternative to online bead stores.

just a note. i went to a bead store yesterday for seed beads [Nicole makes the most fabulous "mixes" for me for my braids - she's a genius at it]. at any rate, i presented my "resale certificate" - NOT for a discount, but because i'm not supposed to have to pay sales tax in California if i'm buying for resale. they refused to honor it unless i spent over $100. trust me - i'm not going in there again!
