AD: New beadies! And shed developments...

I miss her too and I haven't even had the privilege of laying my eyes on her. But I did a swap with her so I am blessed with a piece of her lovely work.

Ooooh Kalera - The tumbled beads are awesome!!! What are you using for your tumbling media? And how long are you tumbling? I've tried tumbling some beads once - with cerium oxide, and after a day, not even the slightest sign of change from shiny to matte.

I'm so excited to see your shed development galloping along. The heating and ventilitation system in my studio formerly known as the garage SHOULD be complete tomorrow. I'm excited & anxious and can't quite believe it's finally happening. The a ton of insulating has to happen, and then finally painting and the rest of the esthetics - we're probably talking next spring before it's all done but at least I can work and have students out there over the winter - good as I already have someone signed up for torch rental one afternoon a week, and several people who want private classes. Turns out one of the plumbers/gas-fitters is a woman, so my hope to have women involved in most of the major studio work is still on track.

Thanks, Susan! The media I use is a bunch of 3mm Moretti stringer into

1/4" bits, and something called "medium grinding powder", which I'm not sure of the actual composition of, but it came with the tumbler and is meant for the second stage of tumbling rocks, so it's pretty coarse. I love the stuff! Works in about three hours. I'm considering trying the fine, to see if I get a more silky finish.

Word on your studio! That's hot rats! So far I've had women involved with my studio, too... me, and my electrician's sister, who hung out and watched the whole time. :) (We're friends.)

I'm enjoying seeing the progress on your new bead shack. :) Tell us about the name you've given it.

The name was very impromptu; the Mama is something that I picked up before I had kids, actually, because I like to give meals and advice to stray computer geeks. They used to call me Mama Tiki, because Tiki was (and still is, in a place or two) my online persona. Lola is my alter ego, short for Dolores, which is my middle name. (My new middle name: I liked Dolores so much I adopted it, as my original middle name was painfully generic.) I'd call it a bead shed, but Su's SH*D kind of has the corner of the market on that! :D The alternative was Bead Hut, which also has a nice sound to it, but Shack flew off my fingertips first, so Shack it is.

Oh no! I didn't mean to corner the shed market. Only the SH*D market!

Thanks Kalera - I'll get some medium grit when I go into the jewelry/glass store tomorrow to finish labelling frit/start labelling the next order of rods - egads, something like 300 lbs. more.

They're here finishing the ductwork inside and then this afternoon is the studio. It is going to be so good to have heat! Winter is really only 3 weeks or so away here and space heaters just don't do it! As far as ventilitation - I know that my eyes particularly don't like silver fumes - they're always a bit swollen after a day of making beads with lots of silver foil - something I do quite often.

It's so amazing when one gets to move to the next level in one's passionate pursuit and take care of what needs to be done to do art in a better designed, safer, more comfortable environment. Next week we'll have been in the house a year - I thought the studio re-development would all be done sooner, but this is good. I agonize over every decision, so these things take me awhile, plus with the zero energy I have during the winter, nothing happens quickly. And then of course, there's the money thang ...

I love your shed development pictures! Keep 'em coming. Reminds me I need to go and take a few more "before" pics this AM.

Yeah, but I'm pretty happy with my Shack. See, it's a shed right now, but when I'm done it will be a Shack, and we all *know* what good things happen in shacks!

OH YES. Yes indeed. It's a big goal of mine to not only visit you, but to get up into the Northwest again someday without the Baggage I've recently dumped for GOOD! ~~ Sooz To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong. ~~Joseph Chilton Pearce
