Here I was browsing through bead websites (as I often do) and I was wondering what the difference between Paula and this stuff was:

It's probably something really obvious (like a different shell - duh) or a different way of treating it, but I just wondered! Charlie.

It looks to me to be Paua... very pretty, but it may be the Paua laminate? They still look nice.., especially the hearts.

So is abalone (or however it was spelt) another name for Paula? The UK name maybe? All so confusing, but so pretty. Not really my style though, although I love the dyed red versions this shop sells!

The name IS PAUA... not Paula! New Zealand Paua Abalone Shell A VERY UNIQUE NEW ZEALAND PRODUCT One of a kind! New Zealand Paua, (abalone), Shell, (Haliotis iris) Paua: The Maori word for abalone. The Shimmering, Iridescent Blues and Greens of Paua! Stunning iridescent displays of vibrant colors makes paua unique among the world?s nearly 130 abalone shell varieties. Others pale in comparison! It is truly one of nature's marvels! Maori, an indigenous people of New Zealand consider Paua an Traditional Taonga, (Treasure). Paua Shell is only found in New Zealand! Each shell is different in it's color toning, and in the patterns within the shell. There is no other shell in the world that has the color like Paua Shell! Color that varies from greens & pinks to purple & blues, and even some shells with gold or crimson toning. Dyed Paua is exactly that.... dead... garbage! I don't like it... don't want it.. and it will bleed and fade.

Sorry, the spell checker corrected me!

I see now, I knew you'd be able to tell me that!

want it.. and it will bleed and fade.

Yeah, but I love it. It's got the pattern, but in the colours I prefer. Does it really bleed? I may have to get some and make a piece to experiment.

Charlie, I have some dark blue beads that I'm pretty sure are dyed paua, which I like very much. (They also might be a darker blue shell of a different kind, since they are thicher beads). I don't mind a GOOD dye job as long as it's subtle. A lot of the dyed paua is in such ridiculous colours it looks like swirled plastic and not any sort of shell at all.

These ones look just a little unlikely. That would be the very maximum I would like in color change. Assuming that one would not discover while looking at the from the side that they are a sandwich of blue or green placric with a sliver of shell between them.

Let me amend this by saying, I don't know if the colour of these has been manipulated. If they have it is a subtle enough change works it would work fine for me, as long as they are well done.
