And the one we moved back to is just old enough (circa 1947) to not be that interesting architecturally and to be a real PITA!! Practically the day we moved in the sewer backed up into the house and we had to tear out carpeting AND walls in several rooms (which our homeowner's insurance wouldn't cover), and we just recently had to replace a broken water main. Now, if this place were over 100 years old, I would LOVE it to pieces and wouldn't mind so darn much, LOL.

That describes the 5-plex I manage exactly. Including the water main, tearing out carpets, replacing toilets (4 of 5 so far!).

Aaaaaarrrrrggggg.

Truthfully, I have a love/hate relationship with my house. This week I love it :-)

We've had our share of problems, but yours tops them all. That must have been really rough. Years ago our neighbors had the sewer back up in their house while they were away at work. Somehow it kicked off the air conditioning, so it was a *real* mess when they arrived home. Hot, stinky...I'm sure you know what I mean.

And to have your water main go right after a sewer problem? I think I would mind that kind of problem no matter how old my house was!

But you know, it doesn't sound as though you've got a bad house. It sounds more like the infrastructure in your neighborhood is really old and needed repairs/maintenance years ago. The neighbors I mentioned above had a house built in the 60s, and the event took place in the 80s. I think that, depending on the neighborhood, you can have those kind of problems no matter how old your house is. Hopefully, since you've had all this repaired, you'll have better luck in the future.

Oh, I definitely agree! This house seems to have been built extremely well - all of the problems with the plumbing/sewer are age-related. I've been told that the kind of pipes used when this place was built only last about 50 years, so it was inevitable. Just wish they hadn't have happened so close together and that our homeowner's insurance had covered the sewer problem. Once we replace the hot water heater, we figure we won't have to replace anything else here for quite some time (knock on wood) since we've pretty much done it all now. :-)

I will knock on wood for you, too. My entire house is made of wood, so maybe that'll help.
