Well, Tina, the Gathering of Living Light is in a different place every year, this one is in northeast california, we think. Folks are out Scouting for the best place right now. The Rainbow Gathering (same thing) is spread over 5 miles x 5 miles so 20,000 folks are not crowded the same as at a bluegrass fest. And since gatherings are (almost) never in the same place, the impact is really not an issue. In fact most the forest in the US is logged and used for pasture. The 'gathering of the tribes' is also a name we use, and the one in alaska might be the same thing.

vj found this in rec.crafts.beads, from "Christina Peterson" :

]So is the Gathering by Oroville?

20,000 incoming to OROVILLE???????? wow!

that's almost as amazing as 20,000 incoming to Paradise for the 'Johnny Appleseed' days.

Dh and I drove the (at the time, only had the one) kid up there about three years ago. Such beautiful scenery along the way!!! I could see a gathering of that size happening around there.

beautiful scenery in between, yes. beautiful scenery above the dam, yes. Oroville itself is rather odd and VERY poor.

So it's not wheelchair-accessible. Hmm. Not very open, therefore. Not really. ~~ Sooz

Not wheelchair-accessible, but I have heard of handicapped folks attending, with lots of (volunteer) help.

I'm not sure how I feel about the whole thing, but they do seem like fairly nice, well-intentioned people.

Speaking only for myself, I would pass on an event where I have to recruit volunteers to help me move around. I loathe not being able to do it on my own, and as you all know, I don't ask for help.

I suspect that there are a lot of people like me who just will not attend events where they can't move along without help. That's not to disparage the volunteers in any way, it's a manifestation of the stubbornness that keeps me alive.
