Lapidary Journal Oct Issue

The Bead Special Issue of the Lapidary Journal has already sold out in my city. I'm miffed. Was it worth paying upwards of $15 bucks to get a back issue?

Other than seeing the pretty pictures and part one of how to make a leaf bead, is there anything major I am totally missing out on?

I do want to get a subscription but it isn't much of a deal when they ship to Canada and not all issues ring my bell. Besides, even if I get a subscription today, I wouldn't get this year's October issue.

So, was the Bead Issue of the Lapidary Journal a "must have"?

Thanks!

Sandy, I was extremely disappointed in the Bead Annual this year. It is TINY compared to past years for one thing. Aside from the article on Rob Eaton's beads, I can't remember anything memorable about it. Patti

$15 for a magazine (especially one that's not very old at all) is ridiculous!!! Good gravy...

I am almost sure I have an extra copy of this issue (and if I don't, I can get it for cover price, which wont break me) I'd be more than glad to send it your way.

I can't honestly say if it's good or bad, if it's worth having or rubbish bin filler--I really don't know your tastes.

So.... email me yer address offlist if you're interested in seeing for yourself! :-)

Thanks, Patti. I am going to take m3rma1d up on her offer though. I love rcb! I know I don't post much but I am here pretty well every day, reading you all.

I flipped through it at the bookstore and decided to get Bead Unique instead. We had a subscription once and found that we really didn't use much out of each issue. It's more for metal workers and faceters IMHO. A little bit too technical for us, and not much about beads, beaded jewelry or Poly clay (which hubby uses).

I dunno why, (and I buy Bead Unique--I buy all jewelry mags for at least looking for good ads when I'm on the can) BUT.... I always stare in horror each issue upon spotting the editorial column... Her silly pics with her dressed up pets creep me out majorly. Add to that, the fact there's a new picture each issue.... with new tacky poses & costume changes for all. It really sets the mood for the whole rag, for me. And the mood (again, for me at least) is "embarassing"...

I guess the faceters share your humble opinion, since they named it Lapidary Journal after all :-)

A little

heeheehee!!! Ok, that's kinda neat/interesting/weird/ironic to see your opinion. Many of us* have been complaining more and more about how much beads, glass, strung beads, beaded jewelry, Polymer clay, Metal clay, and a million other what-have-yous have taken over!!!

*Ok, wait--I feel funny saying "us" like that. Of course I love beads, but I also feel like.... Well, when I want to read a beading mag, I can pick up a beading mag from the stack. I get them all, and I do appreciate them!

But with every issue that comes out of LJ, I find it's just fulfilling less and less of my needs, and I'm not cool with abusive relationships these days!! :-(

Luckily, there's older issues all over ebay, though.. But not too old, though I actually got June 1978 a few days ago, just 'cos it was the month/year of my birth :-) But I mostly just search out things from late 90s to now, simply 'cos I like ads with URLs in these days of everything online... But yeah, the ones I'm finding from late 90s to 2003/some of 04 make me happy. They really seem to fill that niche between "beading and/or twirling wire" and "pave-setting diamonds in platinum" that I crave so desperately.

I never noticed the pet pics! LOL

"pave settings with diamonds" kinda makes my liver quiver. hahahahahahaha
