Magazines

Hey all, the great white hunter comes home deerless (didn't have to, just didn't have the heart to pull the trigger) so I went to the bead shop (Pink Flamingo) and picked up the new Beadstyle. I wanted to see what all of you read and why. I like Bead and Buton and special issues by various magazines, but by far Beadstyke has become my fave. B&B seems to have too many things that, although beautiful, just seem very impractical to wear. Beadstyle is much more along my style-lines (if i have any).

Hope all are safe! Big D

David,

I get B&B, Beadwork, Beadstyle, Jewelry Crafts and Belle Armoire. I'm probably going to let Jewelry Crafts subscription lapse - they just aren't as good as they used to be. I also pick up the occasional bead mag from the folks at Lapidary Journal.

It's funny, I had to do a major subscription "housecleaning" this year....I dropped everything but Lapidary Journal. I don't do anything with seed beads so B&B (which I've gotten for years) finally hit the goodbye list. Nothing against seed beads, it's just not very relevant to me. LJ, however, has become much more appealing since I've started to dabble in silversmithing.

Being a newbie, and a guy who didn't pay much attention to jewelry til I started making chainmaille pieces 2 years ago, Beadstyle is perfect for me. I can see how more experienced beaders may pass it up though. I have seen Lapidary Journal, and I was amazed at some of the articles in there. Maybe some day! Be safe Big D

Beadwork is good, B&B is the best bead mag IMHO, Lap. Journal is great if you do things with metal or gems, and Ornament is an all round eyecatcher. Belle Armoire is gorgeous and also has fiber/wearables which I like lots. Sarajane

Puts you in good company. Tank McNamara couldn't bring himself to do it either. (one of my all-time favorite strips from that comic)

BeadStyle is good for people like me who do simple stringing. I read it mostly for inspiration -- not so much the designs themselves, but that "Hmmm, I never thought about using This with That" epiphany. Since I don't do seed-bead work, I like having a magazine which focuses largely on stringing. You might also look for Beadwork's focus-on-stringing issue which is out right now.

Hi David,

I find deer to be a bit gamey and prefer moose or caribou. Often we trade salmon for it, but didn't go dip netting this year. We eat natural meat when we can.

I subscribe to Bead and Button, Beadwork, and Lapidary Journal. It's more than I need, but I can't decide what to eliminate.

In the next town over (90 miles), in Delta there's a herd of wild bison. When the herd gets too large for what the land will feed, there's a lottery for culling the herd. There are also a few places up here where the raise "beefalo".

Staying home in the log cabin in front of the fire is good too.

I have an often-lapsed subscription to Ornament that I renew every few years, but they spend less time on hard adornments and more time on fabric these days. I often wish they would split into two magazines.

Other than that, I'm waiting for a lampwork and fusing monthly to come out!
