OT - flu [?] help!

i know several people here have had that nasty bug that settles in your lungs lately . . . and now i've got it. **sigh** like i need one more thing right now. [looks like i may not have the strength to go to Sacramento this weekend, and they probably don't want me to share, anyway!]

can some of you who have been through this tell me what WORKED? i know in one of the threads there were a lot of possible remedies suggested, but which ones worked for you???????

no fever, so far - just nasty nasty cough and chest tight and hurting.

thanks!

OH, Vicki, i'm soooo sorry. Vicks vapo rub really helped me, along with a zinc/vit C lozenge. Lots of natural juices, and lots and lots of rest. For the cough, i used Ricola, and even resorted to Robitussen a couple of times.

Feel better soon...and buzz me if you need to chat

thanks - i'm going to be taking lots of notes before i try to go out to the store.......

just a note to anyone who uses Vicks Vaporub or any of those ointments that go on your chest to help ease breathing - DO NOT go outside with that stuff on! make sure you have had a hot, soapy shower and gotten it all off first - fastest way in the world to wind up with pneumonia! [i didn't realize it until a pediatrician warned me]

YES...i'd forgotten about that. Although, i never did use it ON my chest..i smeared it on my upper lip (asking the doc if it was ok first).

My DS got relief (eventually) through rest, boatloads of hot fluids incuding teas and chicken soup, and garlic toast. Chop the raw garlic, put it on a piece of toast. Alacer's Emergen-C's twice or even three times a day help too. .the vitamins start working in your mouth and throat, unlike pills. Please do rest----its nasty, this bug, and really wiped him out for several days. Sarajane

i'd forgotten all about it until you mentioned it. i'm going to have to get some. i quit stocking it when the kids grew up and objected to having it smeared on them . . .

thanks, Sarajane! [added to my list] it's the "doing it all myself" that is the hardest - and trying to keep working at the same time. MDs are notoriously cranky about getting their work back, although these three seem to be getting used to the idea that i do tend to do my own thing when necessary.

One thing that has helped me with the sore/itchy/scratchy/dry throat is Halls Fruit Breezers. There is no Menthol in them. The active ingredient is

7mg of Pectin. The other ingredients are: colorings, flavors, glucose syrup, partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil, sucrose, titanium dioxide, and water.

They come in 3 flavors all of which I like, but the Cool Berry one is by far the best. They taste like fruit punch and they really do work with no nasty menthol taste. I would recommend them to anyone who has problems with dry scratchy sore throats.

you are welcom, m'dear. Celestial Seasonings has some great ones out now, some even have echinacea in them. (Which, BTW, anyone with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, Exzema or Psoriasis or other auto immune diseases should AVOID. Echinacea pushes the immune system, and with those problems its already overstimulated. Sarajane

Thera-Flu - the one for cold and congestion, and then take plain old regular Robitussin as well. Kick that crap in the butt!!

Thank you so much for mentioning this, SJ...as i was just diagnosed this past week with arthritis in my left hand. I do tend to take echinacea in the winter time, but i guess I won't be doing that anymore. Thanks again.

Oh crap, I think I have it now. I have been telling myself that this propensity that I have towards wanting to throw up every minute of every day is just nerves, LOL. Except now it has come with a fever.

May I suggest ginger tea. Ginger is an anti-inflamatory.

Jalynne, if it is osteo-arthritis, that's quite different--I don't know that echinacea is bad for that kind. You'd need to ask your doctor if you have immune sytem issues. Sarajane

It's rheumatoid...and spreading slowly. It sucks, big time, but I'll work around it.

When I got my arthritis diagnosis, I read a LOT. The library here has some great books, including the Duke University Hospital Book of Arthritis and Connective Tissue Diseases, see if you can get it or something like. Also try healthfood stores or Amazon.com for "The Miracle of MSM". Great info, great substance. Its dietary sulphur, (methylsulfanylmethane, I think its spelled right, maybe) and it reduces inflammation. Inhibits the prostiglandinB AND its co-enzyme, whereas Vioxx and other new drugs only inhibit the prostiglandin, leaving you more vulnerable to bone spur formation. MSM is sold in powdered form in healthfood stores, I'll send you some if you can't find it; email me your addy...I just got a new pound myself-, about $9.00 per, and well worth it. It and flaxseed oil (omega3,6 and 9 fatty acids, you really would benefit!!!) keep my pain and inflammation levels wayyyyyy down.. I still have to be careful---but I can move again, and I don't hurt every single minute. Sarajane
