OT = good vibes if you have some extra

If it's for a gov't job, there could be two big reasons fro the testing. One is just gov't procedures. The other has to do with future consideration for people entering that work force.

Do be careful what you are soldering. When I first started silver smithing around 1975/7. The bank manager asked me to take my wares in to show him. It was the year of the Queen's Silver Jubilee and I had been making pendants and cuff links and getting the special hall mark on them. he was impressed and said if I wanted to set up in business he would help with any loans. I knew that it would never be more than a hobby with me.

Well he asked me if I would solder the charms that he had got for his wife's bracelet. Every thing went fine until I got to the ship in the bottle. That bottle was plastic and of course it melted. I was in a real panic and I went down to the local jewellers.( His daughter used to go to the silver smithing class at College with me)

I told him what had happened and asked if he had another charm like it. Fortunately he had a broken one and gave me the bottle to put on it. He fixed me up with some special solder that he used for such charms. In return I had to solder him a length of silver on to a charm. It was a piece that was attached to the ship in the bottle and also was the end where the jump ring fits to put it on the bracelet. He did not do jewellery repairs that required naked flames himself, he is a watch mender.

My guardian angel was looking after me that day. How could I go and tell the bank manager that I had ruined his wife's charm.

He actually bought one of the Jubilee pendants off me.

okay, Shirley! i'm not enamored of working with an open flame, either. **sigh** i want to be able to solder jumprings closed and if i have two pieces of silver wire, curved in opposite directions, solder them together at the points where they cross. that sort of thing.

Can you take courses at the State College there? Univ of AK functions as a University, "distance learning" ("Correspondence" school) center, as well as remedial and community college. So things here are different. I would have thought they'd have jewelry classes. Maybe call someone in the Art department and ask. They also might know someone in the art community that gives classes.

i did stop at two galleries today. one was closed. on SATURDAY? how much sense does that make? anyway, the second gallery "might be interested in my things after Christmas" and gave me the name of a local artist who might understand what i was talking about. i called her and they are having an "open studio" tour the first two weekends in November. she said one of the people doing it might be able to help me - and if not, she would spend some time with me after those shows were over. so at least maybe i'm finally heading in the right direction! she said, "bring your books and samples" and at least she understood what i meant about the books only helping up to a point!

so i just have to force myself to be patient until after Nov 9.

**smile** there are a lot of artists up here, i know, but for some reason i only seem able to locate the "non-glass" ones! they are really hard to find. none of them seem to advertise . . . at least in places i see. hopefully, i'm finally going to meet some of them!
