An old Jamaican lady told me to do this, except instead of chicken soup she said add it to hot water and honey. It still tastes crappy but it works...

I keep Mason jars full of honey and lemon juice at all times--if a sore throat, bad cough, or whatnot hits, the jar comes out, and we spoon out whatever we can tolerate as needed (I can drink the jar down, and have, a couple time) Of course, once a jar is used by one person, it's off limits to everyone else.
