My mom is 84 and broke her left hip in 1989, she had the joint replaced with a steel ball. Wed. night she had another fall and broke her right hip. The ball was fractured and the leg broken in half about 2" below the ball. She was operated on Thurs and they put 2 intersecting screws thru the leg and ball joint. She's in fairly good health, but since the first fall she's developed diabetes which makes healing harder. Recovery is also going to be slow and difficult because she was having problems with the left hip already and was avoiding going back to the doctor for fear he'd have to operate on that one again. I'm trying to be upbeat, but I'm pretty wiped out about it. Would appreciate all the prayers you good people could send up for us. Thanks! As you can imagine, I'll be busy trying to help here and probably won't have time to check in for your replies. But I KNOW you'll have us in your thoughts, and that means lots. Much healing energy for your Mom, Karleen. And for you and the rest of the family also, so that you can take care of her as needed.

A word of encouragement. At 79, my mother got smashed up in a car accident. Broken arm, neck ribs, "knee" (top of the fibula where it forms the knee) was broken in several place. And Mom has had problems with osteoporosis. Mom has lost the use of her arm, but that awful fracture of her knee healed up perfectly. I hope your Mom heals up well too. It will take determination, and the Fossimax she will probably be put on. Another way my mother had to heal from this was to come to accept the paralysis of her left arm.

Karleen,

I missed the original post but you and your mom are in my thoughts.

Be sure and keep an eye on her feet since she has developed diabetes. The most minor thing can become a major problem with diabetics.

Sending healing vibes her way and calming vibes to you.

Oh Karleen -- or poor mom!

Ladies - remember broken hips are 90% not due to the FALL .... the hip breaks and the person falls.... Most people think they "fell and broke a hip" - truth is -- the Hip BROKE and they fell...

Take your Calcium --get bone scans if you are at risk of bone loss - and make your doctor give you Fosamax for your bones....

Prevention is much better than the long recovery......
