OT: Sarajane's Brilliant Son

Please excuse me while I brag about someone else's kid. SJ sent me a wonderful surprise package yesterday, with two of my all time favorite Mystery Science Theatre programs on tape. Included as an added bonus was a short film by SJ's son, Ian. (And some way cool paperdolls, too - but that's besides the point)

Ian's film was twisted and brilliant. I watched it four times, and each time, I kept finding more little details that he tucked in to catch the attention of the observant. It's very hard to describe the film - it's about a purple puppet who attempts to write a screenplay, but every little bit of it is engaging and great.

That boy has some real talent brewing in there. I think he gets it from his mama.

P.S.: Anyone know how to get something that's on VHS into a digital format so it can go on the Web? This film is short enough that it could be viewed online, and it's really great.

I'm so glad you think so too!!! I'm pretty pleased with what he's getting up to these days, besides 6'3"!

"James J. Inkbladder Attempts To Write A Screenplay" is his first student film while in film/video school. He has a friend who is supposed to be able to turn it into an .avi file so we can put it up on the web, and it'll probably happen after he finishes his final exams. He made the octopus puppet (James J.) a few years ago...at first when I had sons I was a teenybit sad because a mom with dollmaking skills would be so nice for a girl--but my sons love puppets and props, so no loss there! Yeah, just run it off the VCR onto a digital video camera with a firewire connection. Dump it onto your iMac, take it into iMovie and whack it a bit and output it as Quicktime.

I'll give that a try later on. The kids are watching that particular videotape as I type this.

Hang on, there! He's proprietary about his art, but he'll get it up on line soon...he's hoping to use it and more to help round up scholarship money. Films seem to be expensive to make, imagine that! Sarajane

Ah well, I discovered that my VCR doesn't have a firewire or USB jack anyway. Besides, it would be way pushy for me to put someone else's work on the web, no? Even though I think it's great.

well, its something I would do, at least thinking about it!! But I will let him take his own pace with his work...I'm just so glad he's DOING some. We've always said we don't have a lot vested in any one choice of occupation for our kids--we want them to have something that they really WANT and are driven to do. Sarajane
