Kid-appropriate Beads Needed. Please Help!

All,

Well, our school project of a children's jewelry making workshop is going through with a bang. We are going to be part of a Family Night hosted by our school health center, open to the general public. The event doesn't have much funding; generally people donate their time and supplies for activities. They do not know how many kids will show up but last month was the biggest ever, with 240 kids attending. Some were babies, but over 100 were interested in arts projects.

So... here is my dilemma. I was planning to buy the materials for the project myself, back when I thought we were going to be getting materials for 10 or 12 kids. Now we are running two projects. One is for 8-12 year olds using memory wire and size 8 beads and glass and pewter charms (I have plenty of materials for the 10-15 kids that usually show up in that age group. The second project is for 3-7 year olds. The majority of kids who show up are under 6 years old.

Therefore, we have agreed to bring enough materials for up to 200 kids. I am planning to use plastic pony beads and other big plastic beads with "craft string" (which is thick and stiff enough to meet the suggestions of people here, I think).

I was wondering if any of you have any materials laying around that you might be willing to donate? Or suggestions about where I could elicit donations?

Thanks!!!

Marisa, you may want to to post a Wanted AD in Orphan Beads, sweetie. There's a good chance more than one person has what you're looking for. I just ran over my own stash, thinking--"oh! I have that stuff!" and quickly realized that I don't have that stuff anymore, I gave all of mine to Darian! Oops! However, I do have oriental style wooden beads, just a couple packages..would those help at all? Very large holes--we used these in hemp pieces. Good luck with this, it sounds so exciting:)

Candace,

Is this allowed on OB? I technically can afford beads, but not for this project, if that makes sence.

Do the wooden beads have holes comperable to those on Pony Beads? The string I am hoping to get is pretty thick and I don't want the kids to have any problems with stringing; the aim especially for the youngest group is for them to "express creativity" and learn to enjoy the hobby, not to have technical struggels :) (Maybe you and Darian could do a test for me?)

BTW I am open to any string donations too!

I want to make sure there is enough for all. They said that last month, after the first hundred had done their projects they started to run out of materials and a lot of kids were disappointed :(

Thanks!!

Wow, thanks, Su!! I will let you know what happens... if I can elicit donations of stuff people don't even want (or find a store or something which is willing to donate it all) I will do that first.

This is exactly what OB is about, Marisa. Looking for beady things you can't afford otherwise. Go ahead and post a wanted ad sweetie.

I hunted them down and took a good look--the holes are very large, but the quantity is seriously lacking--I only have 20 grams, which works out to 16 super large beads and 14 smaller, but still large, beads. Oh--I got these at WalMart--they come in red, green, and animal print. These are the red sort.

These wouldn't stretch further than a couple of kids, at best. Let me know, tho, I can send them to you if you want to decide for yourself:)

Candace,

If there're only a few of them it probably isn't worth it (and I dont want kids fighting over them either :) ).

Thanks, though!!

And I did post on OB.

You guys are the best.

Marisa, email me your snail mail address and I'll send you whatever I can muster up in the way of beads and the like but I don't think I have any stringing material left.

Su, hold on, I may not need any monitary donations... if I can get a bunch of beads from people I'll be fine and you can send your extra bucks to Rebeka or another cause for me :)

Love
