OT: Update on Mom

The meeting with the two of my mom's doctors who showed up (the attending was not happy at this forced meeting) went well. We have a much clearer picture of what is being done now.

They are still leaning towards Creuztfeld-Jakob(sp), which is the human form of Mad Cow disease (caused in humans by eating meat from an animal with MCD) and can take 40-70 years to manifest. She is not showing any of the involuntary writhing or tremors that are associated with this though.

I went to visit last night, and she was much more awake and talkative, making sense. She said someone should make a "bit pot of soup." She asked for juice and the nurse gave me some cranberry juice which I gave her on a sponge stick and she sucked and swallowed and proclaimed it good. They inserted a central line in her neck and x-rayed to make sure it was in place, so her poor blown-out arms can have a rest. Now I'm making sure she's turned often so her skin doesn't break down.

When I said goodnight I told her my brother would be there before me. She said, "and I'll be here before him!" and laughed. She's making jokes again.

Brother is there this morning and says she's talking and awake. We may have turned the corner here. Keep those vibes coming, They *DO* work miracles!

Constant stream of vibes going your way...

And I am glad you feel better about the communications channels... that can make a huge difference in how everyone feels, and in the outcomes, too.

GLAD mom is doing better

stay on top of the hospital and the docs.

I have to wonder about their "guessed" diagnosis --- since when does that brain disease cause wild fluctuations in blood sugar???? sounds to me like she has multiple problems - and it seems docs always want to find a "simple" answer - when there isn't one.

IF she has any form of "mad cow" or other brain disfunctional disease - these would show up in an MRI..... and/or a CAT scan - (since they leave "voids" or holes in the brain matter) - so if you didn't see that on the prior tests-- I wouldn't buy their line on that. It is very possible she just has brain disfunction related to age - but the sugar fluctuations sure aren't helping anything - since the brain functions on a form of sugar.... Have them test her for insulin resistance too - sometimes people are diabetic in a way that isn't picked up right away... hugs stick with her....

Mom had physical therapy today and with the aid of a walker and the PT, walked across the room to the window and back. Her attending doctor is sending her top a regular room today. And she passed the swallow test and will be able to start eating regular food again.

Of course it took me going there and raising holy hell this morning (AGAIN!) but as soon as I did, things started happening.

She's still confused but is staying awake and makes sense 85% of the time. The neurologist says all the blood tests were negative for the exotic diseases, so we're now thinking it was hypothyrodism which they gave her Synthoid for. Her thyroid levels are now normal but it will take time to get her memory back and words to match her thoughts.

Thank you all so much for your prayers and thoughts. You are the best.

Love,

Linda2

Thank goodness it has turned out to be something that is very treatable! I am sending more prayers for your mom's continued improvement.

yes - this is very true - -My mom went through that ... let me tell you - it took nearly TWO YEARS for her to stablize... and even now they have to watch it constantly. I am glad they pinned down the source though - and it sounds like she is on the mend. Good for you for being tough and sticking with her! HUGS Cheryl of DRAGON BEADS Flameworked beads and glass

Thank God.

Raising Holy Hell on behalf of a loved one is so empowering. Knowing that you're the one that makes the difference can be a very good feeling, IMO.

I remember my mom used to get really confused and lethargic and it always ended up her sodium got to low. It happened once after a surgery she had and they figured it out when I had to take her back to the er after they released her (she also had a pulmonary embolism) and then later on she got like that and I knew I had seen her like that before and it was right there but took me a couple hours to remember and I ran out and told the Dr and sure enough it was her sodium level. It was like she couldn't form words to answer you and all she would say was yes or no and you could see how frustrated she was. Plus she was very lethargic and mostly slept. Funny how it was me rather than her dr that figured out what the problem was the second time.

Linda,

I'm sorry for all the crap you are having to deal with at the hospital. Grrr. I'm glad that you can go into Barracuda daughter mode.

Glad to hear your Mom passed the swallow test - that's a biggie. I hope she continues to improve

Hugs and vibes to you and your Mom.

God, Linda that's so hard. I'll send all the strengthening vibes I can, so you can make it through this horrible, horrible time. Do you mind if I send "bite them in the ass" vibes to your brother and the selfish boyfriend?

Remember that we love you and that you have a warm, comforting home right here, whenever you need it.

I love you, Sarajane.

Just wanted to say that out loud, instead of merely thinking it to myself over and over again. Everything you say here answers the needs of the moment. Physical, emotional and spiritual.

This sounds much better. I hope you can find a way to make long-term care work on terms that are OK for everyone involved.

Can you get a bit of rest now? You must be at the ragged edge after all this time. How has this affected your employment life? Is that still ugly?

Now that your mom seems to be in better hands, we want to know about how things are for -you-.
