OT What I would like for Christmas

It is a well known fact that it gets difficult to buy presents for older people, after all they have already got most of what they need. The other day a friend asked what I wanted for Christmas but before I could reply she said "See you can't think of anything". However that was not true and what I would have asked for she could not give me anyway. My day begins the same. DH brings me tea upstairs and I get out of bed and go into the next room which is my workroom. I switch on my computer and download my emails and newsgroups. It is usually the busiest time because I will have down loaded all the messages that have happened from across the pond during the night here.

RCB used to have well over 1000 messages at any one time during the 3 days kept them on my computer. It used to keep me occupied along with a few other groups for 2 hours until I went I down to breakfast. Alas now there is only about 100 over the 3 days and it does not take long to read them.

So what I would like for Christmas is for all my RCB friends to come back to the group and start posting again. It would make it a Happy and Peaceful Christmas for me. Hugs to all Shirley

Shirley - that's a sweet request.

I, too, noted that there is a lot of ads on RCB - and much less chatter than there used to be.

I've been kind of busy lately - and drop in to read - but not post much..... (other than drooling over Dawn's new studio... LOL)

I have to agree that buying presents gets harder every year, especially in my family where most everyone has what they need (note, I didn't say WANT... because their wants are sometimes pretty extravagant...)

I am, again this year, trying to keep Christmas presents to a minimal and "useful" category... i.e. someone may get a reall nice sweater, but no dust gathering knick-knacks....

my request is real simple - and the same one I've asked for the past several years......

I want just ONE thing...

the winning lottery ticket.... LOLOLOL

I've noticed the lack of posts, too. It's a shame..there used to be so many lively discussions on here, and new posts all the time. But now it's very slow, and a lot of people barely seem to come here anymore.

I'm chalking it up to the business of the holiday season..I know I've been busier than usual lately because of it.

Heh, I think it's my fault. I'll post something, then it's 2-3 *days* before I see anything else :)

Let's see what happens after this...

Cheers, Carla

Hi, Shirley, What a lovely request!!! I, too, have missed all the lively conversation back and forth. Unfortunately, I think a lot of people were turned off by all the fighting which took place over the summer and many long time RCB'ers either left the group or just read and don't post now. I suspect it is the former. In the US, the economy has affected most of us. I know I am working more at my part time job, extra hours, overtime, etc. to make up for the dive in sales that my business has taken. Supplies keep going up, but sales do not. Imported jewelry here, even at supposedly juried shows, is greatly hurting American craft. I've also been teaching more, which I enjoy, but it takes a tremendous amount of preparation and energy. I find I'm often too tired to post. I've also found that my recent bout with bronchitis has taken a long time to get over and now that the weather has gotten colder, my foot has started to "bark" at me. Gawd, I sound so OLD!! The good news is that I will be going to NYC to buy supplies for special orders. It will be great fun to be in the bead district again, especially since I've found a new place with some high end stuff. I'll let you know how it goes. This Christmas season I'm determined to take time for ME. I'm doing some of those excursions I mentioned in a previous post and enjoying the holidays for a change. I love all that stuff that drives most people crazy - the busy malls, wrapping gifts, picking out just the right present, all the hoopla and fun. May your Christmas be blessed, fun and all that you envision, dear Shirley, you and your dh and family, deserve it!! Blessed are the peacemakers.... Patti

Hello Shirley: I found your post a very touching. Yours is the most unselfish request for a gift that does not cost anything. I too have noticed the absence of many of the lively posts that used to provide food for thought. I think Patti has hit the nail on the head with her post though, I too have noticed a slowing down in sales since the recent travails of our friends and neighbors of the United States. We will wish for a happy and bountiful Christmas for them, as well as a safe and prosperous 2006. Hugs to all, David

Seasons greetings to Shirley and everyone. Your request was great Shirley, as, I too, look forward to reading the newsgroups before work. I do not reply or request often but am now of the opinion that if we don't use the group we will lose it- the fun, the variety, the ideas, the help and the wonderful creativity of both mind and hands.Plus, the sharing and caring. I have learnt so much from this group.

I am busy doing orders for galleries plus winding up the teaching year. My daughter was out from London on a fleeting visit. She was sent to Japan for work and popped in which was great. Friends were visiting for breakfast, lunch, dinner and she even managed a quick trip to Christchurch in the South Island to catch up with both brothers. One finishing varsity exams, the other there for a wedding.

On a bead note. My Christmas gifts are going to be beaded lanyards/holders for cell phones. She had one on her phone from Japan and said it was wonderful for finding it in her bag and slipping over her wrist and quick ID. Coincidently, the next day Kandice had some on her web page. Here in NZ they are new to me and will make great sellers.

Cheers, Jan

I really miss these people. They were there for me 4 years ago when the Grim Reaper was hovering over me when I was very ill with heart problems. They uplifted me with their wings of love and prayers. I am sorry to see them no longer posting. It would be a lovely gift to see them back here again.

I really admire your focals David and if ever you would like to swap a couple for a beaded tassel I am game. I have a nice fall tassel going begging at the moment. It is on my website. Hugs Shirley

Thats a lovely wish, Shirley!

We just finished moving, and are getting all the cardboard boxes sorted out, finding things not seen for a decade or so. It makes me aware of all the good things in life that center around knowing interesting people that reach out and communicate with ya...

Such a sweet sentiment, Shirley.

I've been pretty busy myself and not on the computer a lot, but I've thought, when I do check in, that it's been awfully quiet. I always liked seeing and reading about other people's beadwork, especially seed beads, since that wasn't something I did (note the past tense there!).

I'm up to all my old tricks, lampwork, wire, and a little seed beading. Still learning everyday (or tryng to).

Hey Shirley!

What a wonderful thing to ask for!

I've been reading again lately but things here are still pretty much upside down... still reeling from Rita and trying to make sense of what is next! :) And I'm sorry for all the birthdays and anniversaries and events I have missed in the last couple of months. SO hope *everyone* is doing well and everyone's families and loved ones as well!

As for Austin and I... our temporary housing has recently become even more temporary. It turns out this house sustained more damage than first, or even second, look; a wall and part of the roof have to be literally removed and replaced. Though no one has told me when the work will start (and work hasn't even been scheduled for my old house) I'm sorting and packing as fast as I can in preparation for having to put everything in storage. I've applied for a FEMA travel trailer and, if I do get one, my mom has offered me some land out in the country where all the necessary amenities (water well, power, septic tank) can be easily setup. The trailers are 30'x8' with additional pop-out rooms so it shouldn't be too bad as a temporary solution for us. I just want someone to define temporary for me! I hate that Austin will be confined to such a small space but there will be lots of room for him to run and play safely when weather permits and it's walking distance to his great grandmother's house, with other neighbors fairly close as well.

Then again... these are all just 'plans' and human plans are just designed to make the gods laugh!!! So... although 'one day at a time' is a hard pill to swallow, it's the only option at this point. I try to stay happy with today and that is pretty easy to do with a 4 yr old to keep me in line!

I've been working on (and actually finishing!) a lot of necklaces in the evenings and will hopefully take some pics in the next day or two to post. So, for us, all is well and we are doing fine!

And as for r.c.b. I too would love to see the holidays bring more life back here, more lively conversations and 'visiting'. That's part of what the holidays are about!!!

take care sweetie and big ol' HUGS!!!!!!!!!

Polly, I'm sending good thoughts your way for FEMA to get on the ball and get you sorted out.

You're so right about plans though. And about being happy with your kid.

Big hugs wafting your way through the arctic cold.

Polly! I am so sorry to hear that you have to move yet again. I'm crossing my fingers that you get that trailer and that things calm down for you soon.

What a sweet thought, Shirley. I have been bad about posting only because I've been so busy and thus have not done anything "bead-related" in a long time. I'm still in school full time, though I have changed majors so that I can graduate sooner. I'm also still freelancing almost full-time. That doesn't leave much other time for RCB.

We were scheduled to close on our house and move this past Thursday. The sale fell through at the last second because of a problem with the buyer's credit, but not before I'd packed absolutely everything (including the entire contents of my studio, of course). We're living day-to-day out of boxes right now, while the buyer tries to secure another loan.

The end of the semester is looming, and I've also got to finish the manual that I'm writing by the end of the year. I won't be posting or even reading as often as usual. But I will definitely be back once my personal life stablizes a bit. Hopefully, that will be sooner rather than later.

:-)

Oh, Shirley - I love you!! You're so sweet. I wish I had the time to post here everyday.....but with current obligations these days, that's just not possible. I'll try to do more, though!
