My mom used to make me things something like that (when I was in > kindergarden!). They had ribbons woven across the tops of the > barrettes, and the ribbons hung down and were ended in pony beads. The > little metal barrettes she used I think I have seen in sewing shops.

I made those for my girls when they were little too. In the US, Goody brand barrettes are perfect for the job, I miss being able to buy them. My daughters used to tease me about owning stock in Goody.

I also remember when the big fashion trend was all the little covered hair bands, with the hair pulled back and banded at intervals down the ponytail or imitating a french braid.

Ahh, memories of being a volunteer hairstylist.

My college roommate had a pair of cotter pins for earrings, with a sliding washer. When she explained that they were roach clips, I had these visions of using them to catch bugs. Geez, I was really fresh off the farm then!
