Re: Fake or real tree? --was Re: OT Re: Holiday agh :(

I've bought an occasional real tree....roots and all. It started as a quirky family tradition to mark "landmarks" like going into choir, or high school, that sort of thing. My ex and I got a tree our first Xmas together, as well as both the kids' first's...each planted at my MIL's....kinda sad, since her house was foreclosed several years ago. I think about getting one our first Xmas in our new home here, but pines don't fare so well in the desert. I suppose we could set it free up in Rim Country, though. The hard part is keeping it alive after the holidays, until it's safe to plant it.

So, maybe we'll decorate a mesquite tree next year.

I've always loved having a real tree. When I've been able to, that is. Funny thing is, now that we're fairly settled in the house and all, I'm not sure I want one. For all the reasons Sooz mentioned. And this year, we'll be heading to The Great Tink Gathering in Florida right after Christmas, so a real tree would require us to be sure to get it down right away. Bleah.

I have already been up in the attic looking at the wonderful ornaments that I wouldn't have if it weren't for you guys.... *sniff* Thanks again...

When my mother went to Univ New Mexico in her 40s, she brought home tumble weeds and decorated them.

One nifty environmental note....although maybe they're not doing this anymore (it's been a while). We used to buy cut trees from Ikea. If you got one from them (and they were nice trees, too!) you could take it back after Xmas (for a few weekends) and they would chip it for you for compost and give you a credit on your tree. Kinda like the old deposit soda bottles.
