Re: Headaches!

((((Starlia)))) and ((((Sooz)))),

I occasionally suffer from migraines and they are just miserable!! I can't imagine living with chronic pain. I'm so sorry you guys have to deal with all that.

And Sooz, when I was an RN, sometimes the pain management group would be called for patients in chronic pain. I don't think I EVER saw anyone treated successfully with a TENS unit. I know it happens, but we always thought they were a joke.

well, shoot. I haven't tried this yet, and guess I won't hurry, though I have a friend who has one. He didn't find it that helpful either. Sarajane

Have you ever gone to a chiropractor for your headaches? I have an old whiplash injury to my neck, now with arthritis as well, and frequent headaches from that. I also get sinus headaches, and some allergic reactions (as to cigarette smoke) resembe migraines. Chiropractic is the only thing that helps.

Ironically, I found one to be very useful, for a different reason. Pete had one for his back. It helped but not enough. Last Feb we went to Mexico and brought the TENS unit along. As it happened, our hostess's boyfriend had had some sort of siezure which caused a problem with his 7th nerve or whatever. He had Bell's Palsey, which I'd had 30 some years ago. Remembering what therapy I'd had I told him he could stimulate his nerves electronically both to keep his face from slipping by keeping the muscles toned, and also to get his brain to remember to use those muscles that he was now stimulating artificially. He is now back to using his face normally. He's a singer and musician.

Yes - My chiro showed me how to do "traction" on my rigid neck to try to reinstall the curve we are supposed to have. It involves using a rolled up towel under the neck, way up at the base of the skull. Roll it tightly, but adjust it to where you feel comfortable with it. It not only stretches the neck, but it relieves the pressure - including the sinuses, which seems weird to me. My sinuses and headaches are way connected. I don't even use a pillow any more, just that towel all night and a couple times a day as needed. (I can still sleep on my side) The relief this has brought me has made me feel like a new person. I regularly got the - feel-like-you're-going-to-toss-your-stomach-contents-at-any-minute type migraine along with the blinding, numbing headache. Now I go days without one. Sometimes a whole week!

Yuck. Yesterday was the 1st day in about a week that I didn't have some kind of headache. Blah. I hope you are feeling better - I'll send "no headache" vibes to you!

I have to chime in and say that my chiropractor experiences have been good, and they are better than medical doctors at treating pain. Sarajane

Hmm. Sounds interesting. I know a lot of my headaches are related to my chronic sinus problems.

Try it, it's amazing! The concept is to have the weight of your head as the traction weight. Understand? So the pillow is under your neck, rather than your head. And I also find, thanks to thinking in yoga, that if you consciously stop yourself from jutting your head forward, see the line of your spine, and "seat" your shoulders - don't hold them up or tense, but have those - whatever those wing things are on our backs - aim toward each other and go down the back, rather than up, it puts your whole spine, neck included into an alignment that takes the pressure off. Forgive my lack of medical terminology, some days I feel like my brain is wrapped in cotton!

Also acupuncture works at relieving pain, even sinus pain.

I badly sprained my right ankle several years ago, actually tearing some tendons or whatever they are called on TOP of my foot. Was in so much pain and had so much swelling I could hardly walk. Thought about trying surgery, but the doc said he couldn't guarantee if it would help, might actually make it worse. My chiropractor suggested acupuncture and I was really sceptical, but finally thought, what could it hurt? To my surprise it helped the pain and swelling to the point that now the ankle is usually functional.

In a session or two, she also did the acupuncture on my face for sinus and it helped.

I saw the videos, talked to the doctor, and something in my head said NO! So I talked it over with hubby who was all for it. I still said no and I'm glad. I still won't do it because of the major surgeries for battery changes. That's the only thing that stops me.

A TENS unit doesn't require surgery.

I know this wasn't aimed at me but, I've been to 3 chiros, 4 physical therapists, 2 massage therapists, an acupuncturist (from China, been doing it for over 40 years), and 13 assorted specialists. The only one that helped is the pain management Dr. Drugs. I am on enough drugs every day to make the average person lose consciousness. I don't even get high. They do lessen the level of the pain somewhat. Now I hear that TENS is a waste of time and money. When are they going to come up with something that actually works? Barbara Dream Master
