Re: OT - Mt.s St. Helens Erupted UPDATE

Okay, went to bed, slept like a baby for the first time in almost a year. Got up at 9:20, made coffee, turned on the computer and then one of the Portland TV stations because it was time for the USGS news conference in Vancouver. And the mountain STARTED AN ERUPTION while the new conference was going on!!!! And she'd waited until I gotten up!!

Whoa! I don't really have that much earth power, do I??? LOLOLOLOL! Not hardly...

Also, Mt Hood has had a few small earthquakes this morning too. Sorry, Kalera!

Still have FREE shipping, Sooz-a-loo! And it turns out the "eruption" was only some boiling water making steam. Phew!

Yep, only a small steam belch - I'm so glad I didn't miss anything huge! They're still calling for something larger.

Argh!

Well, I think we're a good 50 miles from Hood, so barring really unprecedented lava flow, the worst we'd suffer is an ash blanket. Thank goodness the growing season is over! An eruption in spring or even summer could be disastrous.

I'd better stock up on food though. Crap, I was hoping to coast through the rest of this month on what we have in the pantry!

Ash made it here last time - I'm hoping this won't be as bad.

I don't think it could be, unless she somehow blew out the other side of the mountain this time.

Or Hood went off. There's a couple of villages up there... I hope they'd have enough warning to get down!

I was just teasing you, Kalera. Hood has 3+ magnitude earthquakes all the time. It's not connected in any way with Mount St. Helens. Completely different plumbing system and it's not getting ready to erupt - really! The worst you can expect in the near future (next six months or so) is a possible ash fall from MSH. However, the usual prevailing winds at this time of the year are from the south to southwest which would push any ash cloud north to northeast, so even ash in Portland isn't very likely. You'll be fine and really shouldn't worry about not being able to get out for food.

I agree - Hood had a 2.7 yesterday (or Sunday?) and they are saying it's just a coincidence. The USGS keeps letting us know that the other volcanos are a-ok and there's nothing to worry about there. At least for now. :)

Yeah, I keep my eye on the earthquake records for Hood (the last 3+ was in July of '03), but I'm still not entirely confident that a large eruption from Helen couldn't shake things around enough that Hood might need to get in on the action. They are all part of the same system of volcanos, so while they're not linked, strong seismic activity from one could start up another one in close proximity. We also just plain don't know when Hood might erupt again... it's a currently active volcano; not

*very* active, but still active. It hasn't erupted in a couple thousand years but it has steam vents and it offgasses most impolitely. (I know you know this, I'm just letting you know that I know it too.)

The reason I want to stock up on food isn't because I *couldn't* go out, but because I don't want to go out in ash fall. I don't like the stuff, and I don't want it all over my house. I remember last time, and it gets everywhere, and it's gritty and hard to get rid of once it's in the house. If the mountain dumps and the winds shift, as they are prone to doing, I'd just as soon have plenty of victuals, and dust masks for taking out the garbage, and stay put.

How I know what you mean about getting it in the house! We had a mess in

1980 when we lived in Aberdeen. My husband kept bringing it in on his clothes. He worked in the woods up there and some areas got quite a dusting, so he was tramping in it for several years.

If she blows your way though, you might want to experiment with some Mount St. Helens Ash Beads! The ash is largely silica with several other attendant compounds and should work just like fine frit or enamel powder, depending on the grain size. It would be no more dangerous to work with than any other glass powder product and just might produce some interesting effects. Sure would fit right in with your Tektite series!

Then again, it just might look like dirt on the beads...

;o)

What a great idea MJ. If anyone gets ash I would like to make some ash beads.

Oh, if I get ANY chance to collect some clean ash I am so, so all over that! I may even drive up there when we're allowed again, to get a couple of Mason jars full. I've seen glass made from the ash and it's the prettiest green.

I've been wishing for years that I had saved some of the ash from when I was a kid, but now of course it's all gross and dirty and has shrubs growing in it, if you go up to the ash piles along I-5 from where they dredged the Toutle. I'm definitely regarding this as my second chance!

Other than that, I don't want it in the house... ;)

Anytime you like - except I have plans tomorrow. Otherwise, let me know - seriously, we can meet somewhere and spend a day. It would be fun - and I have been looking for an excuse to go. :) It would be a "business trip"!

Man...I wanna go, too!!!! I'm stuck on a jury, though...jury duty until next Friday. Usually I like jury duty, but this time....I'd so much rather be home on my own schedule, just the way I like it. I've got to get to meet the both of you soon...this is driving me nuts to be so close...and yet....
