The problem is it's not a checkbook or a bank account, but a big whacking house on an island. I simply want to sell my share of the family partnership that owns the house as I'm in the UK and haven't used the house in over ten years, but am still responsible for 1/5 of the upkeep.

You would think I'm the wicked witch and any other evil person in the world rolled into one.

However, the law's on my side and if the troublesome sibling doesn't buy me out at the fair market value then I can force a sale and get my 1/5 in cash, and if I get any more grief that's what I'm going to do.

It's been said that family are the worst to deal with when it comes to money, they were thinking of my sibling.

Well that's rude. In our case my 2 (sucky) brothers have been less than useless in dealing with the house etc - but they also haven't badgered us about it. In fact they don't even know we've sold it.

The one sibling wouldn't know reason when hit with a clue-by-four. My older sister and me are now the 'evil sisters', and there's much odd financial hopping about that may not look as nice when it's out from under the rock where it's hiding right now.

If badgering was all that was being done I'd not mind, but the abusive language and various other nasty actions being taken lately make me not as happy about sharing my genetic code with this one particular sibling. If it goes on much longer I'll simply apply to the courts to dissolve the partnership, the court will do the bookkeeping, order the sale of the partnership property and apportion the money from the sale. And then we'll see what happens when that person ends up with 1/5 of the money and no house.

My father would be ashamed of how it is going, he left us this property to enjoy. More fool him to think that, as it looks like a nasty time ahead. I refuse to stoop to the level of that particular sibling but I won't be railroaded to handing over my chunk so that I end up with 10% of the value of the property overall and the person in question ends up with a nice big house worth over a million. No way.

Oh good grief. Sounds like going through the courts maybe the way to go. Sorry to hear about it - like they say you can't pick your family.

I wish I'd invented the term! Feel free to use the expression any time you want. In fact, here's a virtual clue by four for your brother.... *whack*

Yep, you can pick your friends though! :-)

It's so silly, if everything were being done nicely and fairly then there'd be no hassle and I'd have my cash, the rest would have their house or cash and it would be a nice thing. Some people just aren't satisfied, though.

It will end up one way or another. But I can't have the lampwork B&B until it's sorted out.
