Sewing beads and sequins on ballet costumes

DD's class is having costume night this coming Thursday, and I wanted to make her something she could also wear for dress up, so i'm taking a little dance outfit and putting beads, sequins and rhinestones on it, so that she looks like an ice princess. I'll get a pic of her in it...hopefully it'll turn out cute...lol. Meanwhile, i'm having a challenge with the beads, and am hoping someone in the group can give me some advice. I can't find any elastic thread that is thin enough for the beading needles and the hex cut beads i'm using, so the only real way i can get the beads on without them popping off when DD puts on the leotard is to sew them on individually. This is so incredibly time consuming, that i was wondering if anyone would have some suggestions on what else i could do.

Thanks for any advice you may have!

There are special feet for sewing machines for attaching pearls and sequins. Try

That said, I always sew 'em on by hand. Yes, its time consuming...but then you can scatter them where you want. Sarajane

Would it work to attach the beads and rhinestones to another piece of material, such as a fine net, to be tacked onto the garment later? Thats what popped into my head when I read your post. I hope you figure something time and cost effective.. DD is going to look so sweet! Diana

Jalynne:

Do you think something like FabriTac (a great, great fabric glue) or Jewel-it would work? I don't know if it's important to you that the beads be sewn. Jewel-it has been a lifesaver for me in the past to make quick beaded gifts, and if FabriTac is not in your home...it should be.

I don't sew, and do all of my hems, patches, etc with FabriTac, and it's unbelievable that it can go through washing and drycleaning.

I did try some of that stuff, but when dd put on her costume, the beads just started popping right off. It is a great glue for other applications, though, and I did use it to put the rhinestones on her skirt, which doesn't need to stretch so much. I think the biggest problem is that i was trying to put the beads on the neck of the leotard, and that gets stretched sooo much, that it was necessary to sew the beads on individually.

Thanks everyone for your help!! She looks like a doll! We'll be playing around with her makeup tomorrow, and I'll get pix of her.
